Obituary

Winnifred P. "Una" Muzzi, 93 of Wilmington passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.

Una was born in County Sligo, Ireland, the daughter of the late Margaret (Gallagher) and Thomas Henry.

Una's faith, her unwavering love for her family and friends, and her ability to "keep on the sunny side" were the bedrocks of her life.

Her stories of her childhood in Ireland would make anyone long for simpler times. She grew up in a thatched cottage with her 5 siblings, parents, and her grandfather with lots of relatives just up the road. She dug turf (backbreaking work!), milked cows, fetched water, and helped out with countless other farm chores. In between, she and her siblings got into plenty of mischief–stealing eggs and trading them for candy, imitating "Yanks," and sneaking off to dances. She talked always of her mother's hospitality ("She could make a party out of nothing") and her father's gentleness–and she inherited both. When she was ten, her house burned down. While she remembered staying with her grandfather in the barn that awful night, her telling of "the fire" always ended with how many neighbors donated supplies and helped rebuild the house.

Una immigrated to America in 1955, living in Boston with relatives before coming to Wilmington where she found a job as a private waitress in the home of Donald and Wilhelmina duPont Ross in Montchanin. Of all her "Ross years" stories, her favorite one was meeting the love of her life, Basil Muzzi, when he came to repair the television at the estate. He asked her to a dance. Not only could he waltz, cha cha and foxtrot, he was funny, kindhearted and respectful to boot, so she married him in 1964. She loved, sparred, and laughed with Basil through good times and challenges, caring for him until his death in 2003.

The Muzzi household was a busy one with Basil's TV shop in the basement and neighbors, cousins, friends, and friends of friends popping in. Una kept her house "regulated", as she would say, and her garden looking lovely. She took pride being a good neighbor and friend, ready with a glass of iced tea and at Christmas, a slice of her homemade Irish bread. Most importantly, she took pride in being a mom to Laura and Michele. Though in their younger years, her "good girls" rolled their eyes when she said, "The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world," they came to see her wisdom as they raised her granddaughters.

She adored her sons-in-law, Bill and Paul, and since 2009, she made her home with Paul and Michele and their girls. She loved being "Mimi" to all four granddaughters– learning their crazy dances, cheering at their sporting events, celebrating their milestones, and frequently inquiring about their romantic lives.

Over the last couple of decades, Una/Mom/Mimi's life expanded. She traveled to England, Ireland, Mexico, France and Spain–often with the Fitzpatrick cousins who thought of her as their second mother. She loved a night out at a casino, and despite the odds, she won more times than she lost. Thank you, 88 Fortunes.

But what was truly astounding about Una was that she never got too tired to listen to someone or too old to make new friends–whether that was at the Elks, which she joined in her eighties, or through her children and grandchildren.

In everything she did and said, her Catholic faith sustained her. If you asked Una to pray for you–or even if you didn't but she knew you were struggling–you could be sure she was tugging on God's ear on your behalf. We will miss her singing Galway Bay, we will miss her kind ways, we will miss her long chats, but we'll carry these gifts in our hearts forever.

Una was predeceased by her husband, Basil Muzzi and her siblings, Kathleen, Peg, Sean, Betty and Martin. She will be dearly missed by her daughters and their husbands, Michele and Paul Dorsey and Laura and Bill Brennan; her grandchildren, Neve and Meg Brennan and Allison and Katie Dorsey along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends here, in England and Ireland.
