William A. Karpovich, age 87, of Newark, DE passed away on October 25, 2017. Born in Sullivan County, PA, was the son of the late Elizabeth (Lech) and Paul Karpovich. He worked as a supervisor at the DuPont chemical plant in Newport, DE for over 30 years. He loved to golf and played frequently throughout his retirement. He was an avid birdwatcher. He was predeceased by his daughter, Susan, in 2015 and wife Beryl "Margaret" Karpovich in 2016.Taken from our lives way too soon, Dad passed away in Christiana with family by his side. 87 Years young, every medical professional remarked at how he kept his youth and they were surprised every time at his age. I believe with all of my heart that he was full of love, which kept him young at heart. A rich life with family, he has been the patriarch for his children, his siblings' children, and later, step-children whom he treated like his own. An excellent mechanic he was ready with tools. He loved an adventure as a traveling golfing buddy, but also chose to make his family his priority. He was soft spoken and patient until you knew you had pushed him too far. He had a rural childhood, an industrial career and a suburban life. His favorite music was Classical Country. He had a great respect for the outdoors, especially bird watching and feeders, and was very knowledgeable about trees. He would feed birds and critters alike and was entertained for hours observing in his yard. Uncle Bill to many neighborhood children, he loved all little ones, and they were drawn to him. He laughed, he cried with us, he spent many hours caring for his family. He was humble in his giving and his assistance. He always folded the check. He showed up. His golfing trips and hunting trips were his major holidays. Often, we would hear his humorous story about getting lost in Scotland during one golfing trip to St. Andrews ("You can't get there from here, mon"). He enjoyed return visits to Red Rock Mountain whenever he could arrange them, to catch up with family there and walk the Back Forty. He introduced us to characters in his family tree, we all were informed of Al Karpis, a member in Al Capone's gang. His favorite movies that I can recall are "The African Queen" and "The Wizard of Oz". BBC's comedy was favorite TV, and golf was often on in the background. He had a heavy heart late in life while he called himself "The Last of the Mohicans" as all 5 of his siblings left this Earth first. My dad worked hard and sacrificed to enrich our lives. He gave his full attention, spread his love in many ways, and was especially worthy of the love he received. His spirit lives on in all of us. We miss him dearly.William is survived by his sons, William "Bill" Karpovich Jr. (Susan) of Allentown, PA, and Paul (Julie) Karpovich of Hayward, CA; his daughters, Patti Hitchens of Newark, DE, JoAnne (Jeff) Porter of Clemmons, NC , Kathy Beacher of Newark, DE; and by 14 grandchildren, 6+ great-grandchildren; 3 stepchildren and 1 stepgrandchild.A funeral service will be held on Monday October 30th at 12PM at the Mealey Funeral Home, 2509 Limestone Road, Wilmington, where friends may call after 10AM. Burial will be private.
