William M.
Deputy, "Bill"
October 25, 1937 – October 31, 2025
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness we share the passing of William (Bill) M. Deputy, 88 of Wilmington, Delaware.
Born the youngest of 7 to the late Willard N. Deputy Sr. & Mildred Saunders Deputy in Salisbury MD, Bill spent his youth growing up between Lewes, Wilmington Manor & Newport, DE. A 1955 graduate of Conrad High School, he enjoyed all sports - with a particular love of baseball, in addition to all things automotive & anything related to aviation. Bill proudly served with the Delaware Air National Guard, being honorably discharged as Airman SC in May 1963 having specialized as a flight mechanic in radio communication. He additionally honed artistic skills as both a wood-working craftsman, and was an overall "ace" handyman, where all would marvel at his constant creative ingenuity!
Bill began his formal working years in the mailroom at the DuPont Newport Plant, moving on after 5 years to Atlas Powder Company, and ultimately retiring from ICI Americas in 1999 as a Senior Lab Tech Researcher following a dedicated career of 40 years. It was also during this time that Bill began playing softball with a fever-pitch passion…beginning with local church leagues; then moving on with ICI to the Industrial League, where he would be a valued part of several championship winning teams.
On a chance encounter one day during the early 1960's at Atlas Powder Co., Bill met & then later married (May 1963) the match of his life, his lovely Pat - née Patricia Ingalzo of Minersville, PA. Together they would form a beautiful family having 2 children, Lisa & Scott - enjoying a full life of 45 years together before her untimely passing in October 2008.
He filled these past 17 years spending time being an amazing grandfather to his much loved grandchildren, Casey, Jamie, and Alex, who brought him such joy; along with continuing to pursue his favorite activity - playing softball to the fullest extent with the NCC Senior League, several travel teams, and participating for many years in the Annual Delaware Senior Olympics Softball Tournament. He also enjoyed being with friends playing indoor court volleyball at the Mid-County Senior Center.
When he wasn't traveling for softball, Bill would enjoy spending the winters in sunny Venice, FL and spend summers with family in Lewes & the lower Delaware beaches.
Bill leaves a legacy of admiration, love, perseverance & respect, not just amongst his family, but with his dear friends & former co-workers as well, with whom he would gather frequently. His retiree group affectionately called themselves "The Lab Rats", as they would enjoy laughing & reminiscing over many lunch outings about "lab experiments gone wrong" for hours on end. He did the same with his softball teammates, including his best softball buddy & friend, Marvin Kravitz, as the antics, fun & hijinks would be sure to go with them wherever the team would travel.
Bill is lovingly remembered and will be dearly missed by Daughter Lisa & husband Will Kelly, Son Scott Deputy & wife Stephanie, Grandchildren Casey Kelly, James Kelly, & Alex Deputy, Brother-in-law Jim Ingalzo & wife Leslie of Venice, FL. He will also be dearly missed by his loving supportive Niece Carol Deputy of Lewes, DE, close Nephews Billy, Bobby & Donald Deputy (all of DE) along with 7 additional beloved nieces & nephews; and 3 cousins. The Deputy Family wishes extend grateful thanks to his amazing caregiver & Special Angel Jessenia Hernandez, Dr. Gilbert Leidig of Cardiology Physicians, Dr. David Frankel & Amelia Kuriger of Penn Medicine, DE Hospice Staff, & Home Watch Caregivers.
