William "Bill" Charles Abernethy, 75, of Wilmington, DE, died peacefully at home, surrounded by his loved ones and his cats on April 11, 2025.

He was born in Wilmington, DE in 1949 to the late William F. and Helen C. (née Caulk) Abernethy and grew up in the neighborhood of Collins Park in New Castle, DE. Bill attended the University of Delaware before working at Delaware Trust. Throughout his career, he worked at several banking institutions as a commercial lender.

Known for his humor, Bill was a charismatic person who drew people in with his gift of engaging storytelling and quick wit. (Unfortunately, we are unable to honor his wish to put "I told you I was sick!" on his headstone.) He was also generous in the community with his time, knowledge, and resources. He was a lifelong New York Giants fan who instilled the love of the game and the team in his daughters, even from within enemy Birds territory.

Bill is survived by his wife Joan, daughters Jennifer Abernethy and Kristen (Carlos) Garcia, grandchildren Rowan Hochstuhl and Cameron and Cody Garcia, and siblings Patricia and Paul Abernethy. He is also remembered by his stepchildren Freddy (Patti Ann), Jason, and Eric (Kim) Euganeo and Jennifer (Hilary) Tutrani.

A visitation will be held from 3:00 to 4:00pm on Tuesday, April 15th at Mealey Funeral Home 2509 Limestone Road Wilmington, DE 19808, followed by a Memorial Service at 4:00pm. Burial will be private at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to Faithful Friends Animal Society, 165 Airport Road, New Castle, DE 19720 or an animal charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
