Obituary

Victoria "Vicki" Lynn Land, age 51, passed away suddenly but peacefully on November 1, 2021 surrounded by family and friends. Vicki was born in Wilmington to the late Janet (Bogia) and Boleslaw "Butch" Samluk Jr. She graduated from Padua Academy and the University of Delaware with a degree in Electrical Engineering and worked for Delmarva Power for 13 years as a Senior Engineer. Vicki enjoyed volunteering and helping others. She has been a longtime treasurer for the local Society of Women Engineers and was for several years the treasurer for the New Sweden Centre. She was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, the St. Hedwig Polish Festival, and the St. Anthony's Italian Festival. Vicki mentored teams for the First Lego League and FLL Jr., the Padua Robotics (FTC) team, and volunteered for many events like environmental cleanups, was team captain for the Easter Seals Volleyball Challenge, and the American Heart Association's Heart Walk. Vicki loved the beach, collecting sea shells, and painting rocks, She spoiled her pets Valentino and the late Oswald, was addicted to playing Sudoku on her phone, and watched Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune nightly. She enjoyed planning and organizing travel like family vacations to Disney World and the 2016 Salesianum marching band cruise. She recently planted a butterfly bush in the front of our house and we know she is now visiting and watching over her family as a butterfly. She enjoyed her job at Delmarva Power but complained many times about those E-keys. When Vicki became an engineer, she wondered why steel toe boots didn't come in her size 4! Her love of 80's big hair bands like Motley Crue and Jon Bon Jovi inspired her head banging driving style. Heavy foot on the accelerator and hard brakes would make your head rock back and forth. This could have also developed at the beach when she rode her 3 wheeled ATV through Pots-Nets trailer park, following her future husband around. Every school day she would stand out at her bus stop and keep a watchful eye out for his bus to drive by on his way to high school and she knew one day they would marry. On his wedding day he was asked " when did you know you would marry Vicki," "When she told me." Vicki was always courtside, cheering on her family as they played volleyball in the Delmarva Power volleyball league for 5 summers. She helped out with line judging, keeping score, and running the clock at her daughter's volleyball games. She would always take up a collection from the parents to buy gifts to thank the coaches at the end of the season. Vicki was always safety minded and would constantly remind you to wear your safety glasses, pull your hair up, tie your shoes, wear gloves and your hard hat. She was always quick to point out any birds she saw. "Look there's a chickadee", "Oh look there's a hawk", "We saw an eagle circling today", and "the robins were out in the yard today." She cared for even the smallest of creatures and shared photos of inchworms, katydids, butterflies, praying mantis, flowers, turtles, and bunnies on social media. Vicki is survived by her loving husband of 27 years, Michael; her daughters, Laura and Robin; her sister, Christina (John) Desmond; her aunts, Annette (John) DalGesso and Barbara (Jeff) Thomas; in-laws, Harry and Connie Land; Christopher (Danielle) Land; niece, Emily; nephews, John V and Nathan; faithful pet, Valentino; and extended family, cousins, and friends. Vicki was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents, Boleslaw and Elizabeth Samluk; and stepmother, Caren (Cebenka) Samluk. Family and friends may visit at the Mealey Funeral Home, 2509 Limestone Road, Wilmington on Thursday, November 11, 2021 from 6 to 8 PM and Friday, November 12, 2021 from 10 to 11 AM, with a funeral service beginning at 11 AM.
