Thomas J. Sullivan, Jr., age 95, of Middletown, formerly of Wilmington/Newark/Millsboro passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 5, 2023 with his family by his side.
Tom attended St. Pat's grade school and graduated from P. S. DuPont High School in Wilmington. He was in the US Army and deployed to Japan at the end of WWII. As a member of the DE National Guard he served a tour during the Korean War. He finished his military career as a Master Sargent. He worked for the USPS in Wilmington and operated a gas/service station in Newport before working 27 years at the (Tidewater / Getty) Refinery in Delaware City. There he was a chemical operator and Unit foreman, retiring in 1983. Tom had many interests/hobbies. He enjoyed being a Ham radio operator (call letters WA3CDV) as well as building a vacation home at the beach and one outside of Newark. He and Marie took 2 cross country trips in their motor home. They also took great joy hosting the family's annual "Christmas in July" gathering at the beach.
He was born in Wilmington, DE on June 15, 1928 to the late Thomas J. and Gladys (Lally) Sullivan. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 69 years, Marie (2020) their daughter, Maureen Gillette (2013) and son-in-law, Joe Nycz (2001). He also had siblings, Gene and Trudy, who have also passed away. Tom is survived by his children Kathleen Brady (Bill) of Newark, Thomas III (Janie) of Bear, Colleen Nycz of Raleigh, NC and Charleen White (Ray) of Jersey Shore, PA.; ten grandchildren Paul, Chuck, Jackie, Jason, TJ 4th, Samantha, Jessie, Tom, Kevin and Steven; seven great-grandchildren Kristopher, Anna, Sara, Charlie, Connor, Kate and Cullen.
Friends and family are invited to a viewing on Monday, December 11, 2023 at Mealey Funeral Home, 2509 Limestone Rd, Wilmington, DE from 10:00 to 11:30AM, with a service to follow. Burial service will be held on Monday, January 8, 2024 at 10:00AM at the Delaware Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, 2564 Chesapeake City Rd, Bear, DE. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Bayada Hospice of DE, or a charity of your choice.
