Thomas J. Shannon, III 83, of Newark and Gull Point passed away on Thursday, November 23, 2023 at Accent Hospice.
Tom was born in Wilmington, the son of the late Anne (Whalen) and Thomas J. Shannon, Jr. He was a graduate of Salesianum School, the University of Delaware and served his country in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Intrepid. Tom retired after 20 years with the Delaware State Police as a Lieutenant and Director of Criminal Intelligence. During his time with the State Police, he was a charter member of the Delaware Troopers Association known as FOP Lodge 6 and was elected to three terms as President. Tom was also elected Secretary of the National Troopers Coalition for one term.
Tom was a graduate of the FBI National Academy in 1980 and after completing his career with the State Police, he worked for a number of years in the real estate business and for a short time as a bailiff in the Superior Court.
Tom will be dearly missed by his loving wife and best friend, Rosemary (Scheing) Shannon; his son and daughter-in-law, Andrew and Amy Shannon and their daughter, Caitlyn ; his daughters, Laura M. Shannon and her companion, Carl Rietdorf and Michelle M. Dotson and her husband, Benny and their children, Sierra, Austin and Brandon; his sisters, Kathy Cooley and Nancy Shannon; his brother and sister-in-law, Terry and Gwen Shannon and his nephews, Jeff, Todd, Michael and Danny.
Tom and Rosemary moved to Gull Point in the Millsboro area and he served as a member of the Council and President of the Gull Point Homeowners' Association. He was an avid fan of the Phillies, Eagles and Flyers and he loved playing golf, poker, fishing and being with his family. Tom was a lifetime member of the Delaware State Police Retired Men's Association and the American Legion Post 28.
Friends may call on Thursday, November 30, 2023 at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington after 10:30 AM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 AM. A private burial will be held at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Little Sisters of the Poor, 185 Salem Church Road, Newark, DE 19713. Online condolences may be sent to Mealeyfuneralhomes.com
