Obituary

Thomas W. Moore, 97 of Wilmington passed away peacefully at the Lorelton on Sunday, December 13, 2020. Tom was born in Philadelphia, PA, the oldest son of the late Regina (Heverin) and William G. Moore.  He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II and worked for over 30 years as a pipefitter for the DuPont Company. Tom was a former member of St. Matthews Church and President of the Holy Name Society where he was Father Foley's right-hand man. More recently, he was a member of St. Patrick's Church and the former President of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He was predeceased by his wife, Loretta (Savoca) Moore in 1995. Tom is survived by his daughters and their husbands, Sharon and Kevin Hart of Orleans, MA, Sandra and Charles Ryan of Millsboro, and his son and wife, Thomas Moore, Jr. and Mariann Kenville-Moore of Wilmington; his grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann, Terence Sean (Leslie), Thomas Sean, III, and Luke Everett; great grandson Kieran; and his sister, Regina Brainard of Wilmington. Tom was born on a Friday the 13th which he said accounted for his luck. His early childhood was spent in "lower, slower" during the depression. Throughout his long life he held many roles, brother, father, uncle, father in law, friend. But the one role that was most important to him was that of being a child of God. Tom took his faith very seriously, and throughout his life sought to be of service to others. He was recognized for his service in 2009 when he received the "Caring Bowl" from the Ministry of Caring. To those who were blessed to know him, he was a living saint. Whether that meant serving hot dogs all day long in the basement of St. Patrick's Catholic Church after the parade, making home visits to families in need through the St. Vincent De Paul Society, making the best pancakes at the Emmanuel Dining Room, delivering hundreds of homemade pitzzelle cookies, picking up hitch hikers or giving away the coat off of his back that still had his wallet in it. Tom had an enormous capacity for love, a quality he attributed to his mother. Tom didn't hesitate in sharing his love. He had a way of making you feel special. His love was also shared through his wisdom. Throughout his life Tom taught us how to live our lives fully and to face each challenge as an opportunity. His children, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren will forever be enriched having known him. Tom gained great wisdom from difficult circumstances. At heart he was a fighter, "Whitey" Moore, had a positive outlook on life and never spent a moment feeling sorry for himself. Tom was always fighting for the poor and disenfranchised. He loved to regale you with stories of his youth in Wilmington. "It was a different time then" he would say like many of that great generation. Tom left Willard Hall High School early to help support his family. When the time came, he enlisted in the Navy on November 7th 1942 and was Honorably Discharged on December 7th, 1945. Being born lucky, he shared stories of how he volunteered for every mission they had. He was on three invasions during the war including Southern France, Sicily, and Japan. Upon return from war, Tom reached for and achieved the American dream of marrying the love of his life, owning a home in a great community, raising a family, and having the best job any man could have. Tom loved to work and felt blessed to work for the DuPont Company. He approached his work with zest, dedication, and pride. He never took a sick day in over 30 years as a pipefitter and master mechanic for the DuPont Company. His early retirement in 1983 was precipitate by caring for the love of his life "Loretta" as her medical condition required. He worked at a number of locations but his fondest memories were at the Chamber Works plant. Upon retiring, Loretta quickly instructed him to find something else to do. Father Jim Traynor knew exactly how to help Tom fill his free time. Tom treasured his friendship with Fr. Traynor and could never resist a call for help from him of "Tommy Moore, get in here". For decades, Tom volunteered for a number of Catholic organizations in Wilmington. He never forgot the struggles of growing up poor, and wanted to help others in any way he could. We will never know how many lives he touched through his generosity and kindness Tom's endless energy was demonstrated through his love of sports. Throughout his life Tom remained young at heart. Early in his youth he was a boxer, but also loved to play basketball at the central Y, softball, tennis and golf at the DuPont Country Club. When he wasn't playing sports, he was coaching his daughters in softball and his son in baseball. He even enjoyed coaching from the stands. It gave him great joy to teach others about fitness, sportsmanship, and competition. He said his secret to good health was "to never sit down." He was an avid runner, and when his knees began giving him "trouble" in his 80s he started riding his bike. Neighbors could set their clocks by his arrival to Conrad's track in the early morning. Tom's legacy will live on in his family. He found great joy dotting on his grandchildren and sharing with others their accomplishments. Tom enjoyed traveling and meeting new people, including trips to Ireland and Spain with his daughter Sandy and son in law Tom. He was an avid fisherman and looked forward to catching Stripers while visiting his daughter Sharon and son in law Kevin in Cape Cod in the summers. He followed Blue Hen football with his son Tom and daughter in law Mariann attending tailgates and games. But most of all, he found great joy in being with family whether sharing a meal, playing dominoes, or listening to music. A Mass of Christian Burial and celebration of life will be held Monday, December 21 at 10:00 am at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Wilmington followed by his burial at All Saint's Cemetery. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, masks must be worn and social distancing protocols must be observed by all participating in any aspect of the services.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the St. Patrick's St. Vincent DePaul Society. Donations can be mailed to 1414 N. King St. Wilmington, DE 19801.
