Obituary

Thomas Joseph Higgins, age 77, of Newark, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, January 20, 2022.

Tom was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of the late Emily (McMullan) and Gerard Higgins. He grew up in Brooklyn and later the family moved to Hoboken, and then Rahway in northern New Jersey where he graduated from Rahway High School in 1962. He spent several years living and working in New York City before moving to Delaware. Tom graduated from Delaware Technical Community College in 1978 and began his career as an electronics technician working for a combined 20 years at Dupont, Sterling, and Hologic in Glasgow, Delaware.

Tom was a devoted husband and loving father who enjoyed spending time with his family. In his free time, Tom enjoyed reading particularly science fiction and history. He also enjoyed listening to rock, blues, and roots music. He loved animals and was especially fond of dogs. Perhaps his favorite activity was talking to people regardless of whether they were old friends or complete strangers.

Thomas is survived by his loving wife, Deborah Carol Higgins; sons, Joseph, Christopher (Jennifer), and Brian Higgins; grandsons, Devin and Austin; and various other relatives and friends.

A visitation will be held on Friday, February 11, 2022 from 9:30-10:30 A.M with a Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 10:30 A.M at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 82 Possum Park Rd, Newark, DE 19711. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Toms name to the Brandywine SPCA, 1212 Phoenixville Pike, West Chester, PA 19380 or your favorite animal rescue.
