Obituary

Terrence M. Sweeney "Terry", 70 of Newark passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 5, 2024 at his home.

Terry was born in Wilmington, the son of the late Eileen (Sabotta) and James Sweeney. He graduated from A.I. DuPont High School and attended Wesley College, after which he enlisted in the United States Army. He had great pride in his service in the 82nd Airborne Division.

Terry worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 38 years, primarily at the Lancaster Avenue branch. He retired in 2013 and quickly filled his time doing the things he loved.

He was an avid golfer, and a regular attendee at his 9am CrossFit class. He loved being active and enjoyed the many friendships he developed through these activities. He also loved the Philadelphia Eagles and spent many Sundays watching with family, or texting his kids about the game. He was kind, generous, and very funny. He had a big heart and a life filled with love.

Terry will be dearly missed by his wife of 31 years, Jane McGonegal; his children, Julianne Barclay (Andrew) of Swarthmore, PA, Meg Keating (Ryan) of Hockessin, Brendan Sweeney (Elissa Tuerk-Sweeney) of Kennett Square, PA, Sarah Day Holmes (Robert DeGroat) and James Holmes (Meredith) of Wilmington; his grandchildren, Ryan, Jake, Alex, Sawyer, Riley, Connor, Cassidy, Henry, Patrick, Emily, Lauren, and Teddy; his sisters Susan Szczerba (Stanley) and Margaret Sweeney-Baker (Mark Baker), all of Wilmington; his brothers, Kevin Sweeney (Mary Jo) of Townsend and James Sweeney of Wilmington; his dear friend Dan Creedon, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A Celebration of Terry's Life will be held on May 20, 2024 at Docklands Riverfront,110 West St, Wilmington, DE 19801, from 5pm to 9pm . In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Team Cure Cholangio at https://www.teamcurecholangio.org/_in support of cholangiocarcinoma research.
