Susan McLaughlin Holloway

October 27, 1946 — November 2, 2026

Susan McLaughlin Holloway aged 80 passed away peacefully on Nov. 2, 2026, after a brave four-year battle with cancer. Sue was born Oct. 27, 1946, to Margaret Cummings McLaughlin and Norman D. McLaughlin. In 1968, she married her high school sweetheart and love of her life Jack Holloway with whom she shared 58 years of marriage. Together they raised two sons, Matthew and Joshua.

Sue was a graduate of Ursuline Academy and the University of Delaware where she earned a BS in Nursing in 1968. She graduated top of her class and was honored with the College of Nursing Book Award. Sue also earned a Master’s Degree in Nursing Education. Much of her nursing career was with the state, first as Assistant Director of Nursing at the State Hospital at Farnhurst followed by several years as Nursing Director at the Governor Bacon Health Center. Following that, Sue was a nursing instructor at Hodgson Vo-Tech High School for 22 years where she was named Vo-Tech School District Teacher of the Year in 1998. Sue was a strong advocate of nursing education and leaves behind a generation of nurses who benefited from her guidance and encouragement to be health care providers. She was honored to have many former students invite her to their pinning ceremony when they completed nursing school education.

Family was most important to Sue. She cheered on Jack, Matt, and Josh at numerous sporting events. She hosted traditional holiday dinners and the annual Autumn on the Deck Party. She was famous for her chicken and dumplings. Sue loved decorating for Christmas and hers was always the first Christmas card received. Many summer days were spent with family, especially her grandchildren, at the beach house in Lewes. Sue surrounded her family with love.

Sue is survived by her husband Jack and their son Josh (Colleen), daughter-in-law Lisa Holloway ( Tim ), and grandchildren Katie (A.J.), Luke, Anna, and Jake. She was predeceased by her son Matthew and sister-in-law Joanne DeWeese. Additionally, she is survived by her siblings Daniel McLaughlin (Cathy), Margaret Finn (George), John McLaughlin (Lourdes), and Nanci McLaughlin, her sister-in-law Linda Fulcher, brothers-in-law Joe Holloway (Judy) and Phil DeWeese, and many nieces and nephews.
