Stephen Joseph Reinhardt, aged 94, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 10th, 2021. Stephen Reinhardt was born in New York City, NY, the third child of the late Edna (Miller) and George Nicholas Reinhardt II. He was educated at the Barnard School for Boys in Fieldston, NY, and the V-12 officer training program in Hobart College, NY. He enlisted in the Navy on June 2, 1944 and served until June 1946, after which he attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH where he graduated in February 1947 with a Artium Baccalaureus degree in mathematics. He attended the Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago, IL where he graduated in June 1950 with his Juris Doctor degree. There he was a member of the Phi Delta Phi fraternity. He was recalled to the Navy in December 1952 where he served as an assistant legal officer, defending Navy personnel in Courts Martial, until honorably discharged again in December 1954. Most of his legal career thereafter was with the Dupont Corporation. He retired after over 25 years' service and remained in his Wilmington, for the rest of his life. He was a man of wide-ranging interests, especially mathematics, cosmology and physics. His personal library contained hundreds of books. He loved travel. He trekked through Pakistan and in India went to the Mt. Everett Base Camp. He climbed almost to the summit of Denali in Alaska, and did summit Aconcagua (Argentina), the highest mountain in the southern hemisphere at 22,835 feet. The only continent he did not visit was Antarctica. He collected coins and stamps, striking ceramics, textiles and memorabilia from his travels. He took loving care of his mother after she was widowed and was an amazing correspondent with innumerable friends (especially those in the Bertrand Russel Society) his siblings and their family members. He collected museum toys for an annual Christmas box for his great-nieces and nephews when they were young. He was the guardian of 4 generations of family documents and photos. Until the COVID-19 pandemic he enrolled continuously in adult education courses. In many respects he was a modern man of the Age of Enlightenment. Stephen is survived by his nephews, George N. Reinhardt IV, Jess R. Rowland J., Craig A. Rowland, and his nieces Lynne Alvis and Lee Rhodes, as well as multiple great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother George N. Reinhardt III and sister Muriel E Thaw. Services for Stephen J. Reinhardt will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, his family suggests donations in his name to either of his favorite organizations, The Sierra Club or the Bertrand Russel Society.
