Obituary

Russell D. Protas, 73 of Newark passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, November 25, 2023 at his home.

Russ was born in Wilmington, the son of the late Judith (Barbour) and Hillman Protas. He was a graduate of the University of Delaware where he was a proud member of the marching band as a trumpet player. He served in the Delaware National Guard as a staff sergeant and played in the 378Th National Guard Band. He worked for over 20 years for Franklin Rubber Stamp. After that, Russ worked in financial services for MBNA for 12 years and Navient for 4 years.

Russ was a member of St. John the Beloved Church, the Church Choir and the Knights of Columbus. He was a lifetime Phillies and Eagles fan and shared in the joys of the Eagles Superbowl win in 2018 and the Phillies World Series wins in 1980 and 2008. He and his wife were devoted dog lovers who especially loved Chihuahuas. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Linda Haley.

Russ will be dearly missed by his wife, Barbara E. (Folks) Protas; his sons, Sean Protas and his partner, Jean Kearney of Morton, PA and Mark Protas and his wife, Shannon of Newark; his grandchildren, Tyler, Kaitlyn, Lacey and Tilly and his nephew, Brandon Haley.
