Rosemarie Brunjes (Jan. 1934), devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend, of Wilmington, DE passed away surrounded by family on Sunday, August 9, 2020. Rosemarie moved to Delaware after being a life-long resident of Long Island, NY and while New York was always home, she was proud to live in Joe Biden country and would have been proud of Sen. Kamala Harris as his Vice Presidential pick.
She is predeceased by her foster parents Katharine and Jerome Bedell, Sr.; her brother Anthony Bedell Jr. (a WWII Veteran, MIA), her sister Eileen Stettner, foster brother Jerry and his wife Charlotte Bedell and her grandson Jaime 'Peto' Lotero. She is survived by her sister June Pitcher; daughter Kathy Caudle (Dale); and three sons: Scott (Karen); Keith (Eileen) and Wayne. Her 10 grandchildren: Sara, Kerri, Katherine, Ashley, William, Erin, Leighann, Keith, Lauren and Anna will miss her never-ending love and her continued encouragement that each of them reach for their dreams. She will live on in her 5 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by countless nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, friends, and friends who were more like family.
After going through New York state foster system and living in Queens with her foster family, Rosemarie moved to Long Island and began her family in Bay Shore. She loved living near the water and raising her four amazing children. She also was able to use her incredible artistic skills as a flower designer at Pathey Florist in Bay Shore. She recently reconnected with one of her oldest siblings, and discovered she was one of 17 siblings from her biological parents.
Rosemarie spent several decades as a teacher's aide in the Bay Shore Unified school district where she loved working with special needs kids of all ages. She was a proud member of the Bay Shore teachers union. Her students were more like surrogate grandchildren to her, and when she retired in 2009, the school district threw her a grand retirement party. She loved being appreciated.
Rosemarie enjoyed spending her free time sewing for her great grandchildren and grandchildren, painting pictures for everyone, and drawing or being creative with baking. Making quilts, dresses and bedding for her grandchildren and their families brought her immense joy. Finding stray pins in the finished projects brought us a little reminder that she was thinking of us!
She loved making new recipes for her friends at the Mid-County Senior Center, where she most looked forward to their monthly tea parties. Mid-County Senior Center became her second home, and she missed them dearly when COVID-19 meant everyone had to stay home. She appreciated their friendship through the years.
She was the biggest Yankees fan you'd ever meet, which rubbed off on more than one of her grandchildren. If she wasn't watching a current season game, she was watching an earlier season, still rooting for her Yankees, even if she already knew they would win. She also enjoyed baking Christmas cookies for everyone and making Christmas ornaments for her friends and family to go with the cookies. She especially enjoyed "Moms and daughters" Christmas dinner in Frederick, MD, where she was the grandma to all present. She was the life of the party whether it was with her Mid-County friends, her grandkids and family or friends that were always more like family.
She had two favorite times of the year, Christmas and Election Day. This year all she wanted to do was vote for Joe Biden and ensure that Donald Trump never saw the White House again. She wanted to make sure everyone who could, got out to vote and voted blue in November, it was the most important thing to her in 2020. She would have been proud to vote for Sen. Kamala Harris, for Vice President, too. So please, in her memory, make sure you vote!
The family would like to thank the nurses, CNAs, staff, PAs and doctors at ChristianaCare, 6E and 3E MICU for the incredible care that they gave to their mom and grandmother at the end. You are the everyday heroes we don't deserve, and we are thankful mom/grandma was never alone.
The family will have a private celebration of life this year. In 2021 when it is safe, and we have a president who has controlled COVID, the family will call on friends and family to celebrate with a huge party, the only way Rosemarie would have wanted it.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Rosemarie's memory to: Mid-County Senior Center (First Regiment Road, Wilmington DE 19808-2144; midcountyseniorcenter.org/donate) or the Foundation for Women's Cancer (230 W. Monroe, Suite 710, Chicago, Illinois 60606; foundationforwomenscancer.org/support-us/donate/)
