Robert L.
Matthews
July 14, 1935 – July 15, 2023
Robert "Bob" L. Matthews of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away peacefully on the morning of July 15, 2023, one day after his 88th birthday, while surrounded by his loving family.
Bob was born on July 14, 1935 in Dexter, Maine, to the late Leon and Stella (Hall) Matthews. A proud veteran, Bob served honorably in the United States Marine Corp (USMC) from 1954-1956. After his time in the service, he and his beloved wife, Carol, relocated to Wilmington, Delaware, where he spent the next 32 years as a chemical engineer at DuPont's Chestnut Run Plaza. Upon his retirement, whether it was weekend getaways to historic sites and battlefields, or his annual trips to Colonial Williamsburg and Myrtle Beach, Bob was an avid traveler and always ready to hop in the car (as long as he was driving). In addition to traveling, Bob enjoyed photography, golfing and watching his Boston Red Sox, whom he was a life-long fan.
Bob will be dearly missed by his high school sweetheart and wife of 69 years, Carol A. Matthews (O'Blenis); his three sons and their wives, Robert "Bob" L. Jr. (Denise), Richard "Dick" (Mary) and William "Bill" (Frances); his grandchildren, Kimberly (Manny), Elizabeth (Andrew), Richard Jr., Kathleen, Christin (James), and Michael Robert (Allyson); his twelve great grandchildren; and his brother and sister-in-law, Charles "Chuck" and Rachel Matthews.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2023 from 10 A.M. to 11 A.M. with funeral services beginning at 11 A.M. at the Mealey Funeral Home, 2509 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808. Burial will be held privately at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Online condolences may be made to mealeyfuneralhomes.com.
Lastly, the family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the Somerford House and Compassionate Care Hospice, whose staff consistently went above their call of duty to provide Bob with compassion and care in his final weeks.
