Loving husband, father, son, and brother Robert J. “Rob” Armstrong Jr., age 44, passed away unexpectedly in May of this year. Born in Charleston, WV in February 1982, Rob was the son of Robert and Kathy Armstrong. After the family moved to Hockessin, DE, he attended St. John the Beloved School and Salesianum School.
Rob grew up loving baseball, often playing catcher, and was active in Scouting and student government, flag football, and school theater—forming friendships that lasted throughout his life. He went on to the University of Notre Dame, where he earned a degree in Electrical Engineering and was named Valedictorian of the School of Engineering. It was also at Notre Dame that his deep and enduring love for Fighting Irish football took root. Outside of school, one of his happiest traditions was the annual family vacation to Nantucket, his favorite place in the world.
Shortly after graduation, Rob married the love of his life, Laura. They lived in Milwaukee as Rob began his career with Motorola and later Zebra Technologies in the Chicago area, including a meaningful assignment in Singapore and technical invention that earned a US Patent. Rob and Laura welcomed their two daughters, who were the center of his world. They eventually settled near Detroit, MI, where they formed their family roots. No matter how busy he became in his career, Rob always put family first.
Rob traveled widely for both work and pleasure and approached every opportunity with dedication and curiosity. Most recently, he served as Chief Marketing Officer for Zebra Technologies, where he was admired for his leadership and commitment.
Rob will be deeply missed by his wife and daughters; his parents; his brother, Bill; his sister, Kate; his parents-in-law Dan and Jill; his brother-in-law, Rob; and a large extended family and many friends whose lives were brightened by his kindness and loyalty.
Due to Rob’s many and far-reaching contacts, several memorial services are being planned in his honor. Those who are interested in learning more details and timing are asked to contact a family member to express their desire to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Bernie’s Book Bank in Lake Bluff IL, one of Rob’s favorite charities where he was on the Board of Directors, Salesianum School in Wilmington DE, or the University of Notre Dame.
