Richard Merton Lau, 82, died unexpectedly on November 12, 2021. Richard "Poppop" was a long-time resident of Wilmington, DE. He was born in Canton, China on October 29, 1939. Richard graduated in 1957 from West Nottingham Academy, where he met his wife Gwendolyn Vera Brown. He treasured his time with Gwendolyn which was more than 40 years. He was a machinist for Brandywine Fiber Mills and night clerk at the West Goshen Acme retiring after 30 years. Poppop enjoyed spending his retirement visiting his family. He asked to be remembered as "Poppop who loves his family above all else." He was preceded in death by his parents: Wing Peng and Laura Lau, wife; Gwendolyn, sister; Faith Wong, daughters; Connie Copeland and Lisa Hamilton, grandchildren; Casey Lau and David Lau, great granddaughter; Riley Crossman, and niece Melody Wong. Poppop is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, John and Betty Lau of Phoenix, AZ; his brother-in-law, Carl Wong of New York City, NY; his sons, Richard M. Lau, Jr. and David Lau and his wife, Judy, all of Wilmington; his daughter, Pamela Rutherford of Fort Myers, FL; his son in law John Copeland Sr. of Kennett Sq, PA. Poppop is also survived his grandchildren, Lance Crossman, Lauren Falini, John Copeland, Jesse Rutherford, Amanda Dougherty, Cole Hamilton, Michael Lau, and Kalen Dennewitz; his great-grandchildren, Khalil Lau-Dickinson, Hailey Ray, Jasmine Lau-Dickinson, David Falini, Dillon Mallory, Gavin Rutherford, Jade Crossman, Logan Falini, Ava Rutherford, Vera Falini, Josephine Falini, Charlie Dougherty, Jacob Dougherty, Josephine Dennewitz; and many nieces and nephews. Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent in his name to a charity of your choice.
