Obituary

Richard D. Iorii, age 83, peacefully passed away April 15, 2015. He was born on August 29, 1931 to the late Anna and Joseph Iorii.Richard was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle. He served in the US Army Medical Corps in Korea during the Korean War. After his service to our country, he worked for Marble Craft Tile Company as a tile setter helper until his retirement and was President of the Tile Setter Helpers Union, Local 203 for many years. He was an avid sports fan with Notre Dame as number one, and loved telling stories about how it was growing up in a large Italian family. When he was a young boy, he enjoyed participating in the Model Yacht Racing Regatta which was held at the Prices Run Swimming pool for four weeks in the summer. He won trophies two years in a row skippering his model yacht, The MacArthur. He was a member of the Coyne Club and the Moose Lodge in his younger days enjoying many hours with his boyhood friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Harriet (Wass) who passed away in 2004, his sisters, Josephine Brown, Carmella Iorii, Loretta (Rita) McLaughlin, Janice Iorii and his brothers, Joseph, Anthony, John, Francis and Michael Iorii. He is survived by his sons, Joseph Iorii (Linda), Richard (Ricky) Iorii, grandchildren, Melissa Casper, Taylor Chandless and Rachael Iorii, four great-grandchildren, a sister, Anna Mae Merriman (Eugene), numerous nieces and nephews and a brother-in-law Joseph Wass.We would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the Christiana Hospital for their excellent care during the time of Richard's illness.A Mass of the Christian burial will be held on Monday, April 20th at 11 AM at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church, 6th & Pine Streets, Wilmington. Visitation will be held at The Mealey Funeral Home, 2509 Limestone Road, Wilmington on Sunday afternoon from 4 to 6 PM.In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to The American Cancer Society, 92 Reads Way, New Castle, DE 19720.
