Regina F. M.
Brainard
August 2, 1929 – October 27, 2023
Regina F. M. Brainard of Wilmington, Delaware passed away peacefully Friday, October 27, 2023, at her home, comforted by her children.
She was born in Bridgeville, Delaware on August 2, 1929, to William and Regina (Heverin) Moore. Regina was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, William "Moon" Brainard in 2002, her sister Marcella Abbott, her brothers Tom, Bill, Joe and Dave Moore. Regina worked for the State of Delaware as a state telephone operator and as a page in the Delaware State Senate for approximately ten years where she made lifelong memories and friends. She later retired from a job she loved as receptionist at Cigna Insurance.
In addition to raising her children, Regina was a devoted volunteer. She spent many hours quietly volunteering for countless community causes over the years. She volunteered at St. Patrick Church, the Ronald McDonald House, Christiana Care Hospital, the AIDS Family Resource Center and was a Friend of Kirkwood Library. She was also a long-time member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at St. Patrick Church. She was a voracious reader, a music lover (from classical to gospel, from opera to country) and spent countless hours tending her flowers throughout the seasons.
The home she shared with her husband and family was long known as Grand Central Station. Her children's and grandchildren's friends were always welcome and felt totally at home with "Mom" especially on Christmas Eve when food, love and laughs were shared into the wee hours. She was close to her six children, had a special bond with each grandchild and her great grandchildren were fortunate to spend their weekends visiting MomMom Moon, whose house was full of toys and books.
Regina is survived by her children Paul (Mary,) Gina (Pat) Connor, Larry (Lisa,) Mark (Charlotte,) Marcella "Moose," and Angela (Cullen) Burke. She is also survived by seven grandchildren Paul, Kevin, Mark, Bridget and Lauren Brainard and John and Jace Dennis, seven great-grandchildren Conor, Cody and Marie Brainard and Jillian, Jay, Ryan, and Isla Dennis. She is also survived by many special nieces, nephews, neighbors, and friends. Reg was a kind, generous person with a sense of humor and a tendency to speak her mind. She found great joy in watching or hearing of her grandchildren's and great grandchildren's participation and success in their academics, sporting events, dance recitals and musical performances.
Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Elisabeth Walsh, Dr. Robin Horn and the Christiana Care Health System in Newark. Thanks also to Dr. Khandelwal and the staff at Encompass Rehab in Middletown and the Accent Care Nursing team for their compassionate care of our mother. As her care givers noted, her wit, sense of humor and continued expressions of gratitude were intact until the end.
Visitation will be held at Mealey Funeral Home on Limestone Road on Thursday, at November 2, 2023 from 5:00pm - 7:00PM, and again on Friday, November 3, 2023 at St. Patrick Church, 1414 King Street, Wilmington, DE from 10:00AM - 11:00AM, with a Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 11:00AM.
