Obituary

Nicholas A. Fugolino, age 79 of Newport, Delaware passed away in the early morning hours on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, after a long battle with Frontotemporal Dementia. He passed away surrounded by those who meant the most to him.

Nick ("Nicky") was born on July 28, 1945, in Wilmington to the late Nicholas and Frances Fugolino (Vandergrift). He attended Wilmington High School and graduated in 1963 and went on to Goldey Beacom College earning his Associate's Degree. Nick also proudly served in the National Guard in the Second Platoon Company A and was stationed in Fort Knox, Kentucky. After graduating, Nick went to work at the DuPont Company. Following his father's sudden passing, Nick felt he was needed more at his family's restaurant – Katie's on 6th and Scott Streets – and devoted his time there. After the restaurant closed, Nick returned to work at the DuPont Company in the Remington Arms Division. Upon his retirement from DuPont, he went to work at Astra Zeneca, retiring from there in 2010. In 1987, Nick took a part-time job at the Shop Rite in Stanton in the Deli Department. He cherished his time at Shop Rite and loved his job. He was a dedicated and hard worker and always provided top notch customer service for the last 37 ½ years. He was loved by all, especially his customers and many only wanted "Nicky" to cut their lunchmeat.

Nick is survived by his loving wife of almost 42 years, Eileen Fugolino (Poppiti), his devoted daughter, Gina Crowley, and especially his good buddy and light of his life, his grandson Luke Crowley. Also left to cherish his memory is sister-in-law, Nancy Poppiti, many nieces and nephews, good friend Bob Bell and his furry grandbaby, Gracie Mae. Nick adored his family and always enjoyed holiday gatherings and our backyard barbecues surrounded by his loved ones.

In addition to his parents, Nick was pre-deceased by his sister, Mari Beth Malaczewski, mother and father-in-law, Grace and Carmine Poppiti, sister and brother-in-law, Philomena and Anthony Capodanno, brother-in-law, James ("Sonny") Poppiti, and his furry grandbabies, Maddie Rose and Tucker Lee.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Compassionate Care Hospice for their exemplary care and kindness in the last days of Nick's life. We are especially grateful for Oumou, LaTonya, Lauren, Ralph, Peter and Jennifer who were constantly supportive of our family during this most difficult time. We would also like to thank Minquas Fire Company for their assistance whenever it was needed.
