Obituary

Nancy Sturtevant, resident of Montello Commons in Lewiston, ME passed away on March 11, 2022.

Nancy (Hough) was born in Cranston, Rhode Island in 1929, the daughter of Howard K. Hough and Barbara Luther. After high school, Nancy attended Colby Junior College in New London, N.H., where she earned a degree as a medical secretary in 1949.

Nancy met her future husband, Harold "Dutch" Sturtevant on a blind date while they were double-dating with another couple. Dutch was not her date that night, but they soon became inseparable and were married in 1952.

Nancy and Dutch moved from Rhode Island to Wilmington, DE where Dutch worked for Bancroft Mills and Nancy was hired as a secretary to the VP of Dupont de Nemours. Nancy left work to raise their four children; Jill, Glen, William and Robert.

During the early 1970's the family moved to Switzerland where Nancy was the genesis behind the "Country Living Group," a monthly meeting for English-speaking residents who lived in small villages in the countryside outside of Geneva. The meetings were a way to introduce people to each other and share ideas. They became hugely popular.

The family returned to the States in the late 70's and built a home in the historic village of Centreville, DE where Nancy resided until recently. Upon returning to Delaware, Nancy became an active Hospice volunteer as well as a volunteer at the A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children.

Nancy is survived by three of her children, ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Dutch, her brother Robert, her son Robert, and her grandson Robert. Her positive energy, skill at making others feel welcome and "glass-half-full" approach to life will be missed by family and friends and all those she impacted.

Visitation will be at Mealey Funeral Home, 2509 Limestone Rd. in Wilmington, DE on Saturday, March 26, 2022 from 9:30 to 10:30AM, followed by the burial at the Lower Brandywine Cemetery in Centreville, DE.
