Obituary

Mary Y. Marsh, beloved partner, mother, grandmother, and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 26, 2024.

Born in Wilmington, Delaware on May 13th, 1945, Mary faced life's challenges with determination and resilience from an early age. At the age of 17, after being asked to leave her home while pregnant with her daughter, Mary turned adversity into strength. Through hard work and a tireless spirit, she carved out a place for herself in the restaurant industry, founding Mary's Kountry Kitchen in Stanton in 1975 and later Hockessin Inn Restaurant and a catering business. What began as a small endeavor grew into a thriving community establishment, and her restaurant remains a staple in Stanton as it nears its 50th anniversary next year with her staff and the next family generation carrying on the business.

Mary was known for her unwavering commitment to quality and her stern but fair approach to both life and work. Yet, behind her strong exterior lay a heart filled with compassion and generosity. Mary was a pillar of the community, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. Countless people have been touched by her unique blend of kindness, strength, and understanding… qualities that made her truly one of a kind. Mary was a proud grandmother, whose love and guidance shaped the lives of many.

Mary is survived by her partner, Roy Dickens; daughter, Carlena Foresta (Erminio); son, Raymond Marsh; step-children David Marsh (Pam), Michael Dickens (Karen), Dawn Shutak (Dave) and Kim Givens; and the grand-children that she adored: Tyler Foresta (Mallory), Chandler Foresta, Trevor Foresta, Alessia Foresta, Elena Foresta, Mackenzie Cannoy (Charlie), David Shutak (Hailey), Olivia Shutak, Caitlin Givens, Ryan Givens, and Riley Givens; and great-grandchild, Graylon Cannoy. She is also survived by her sister Linda Disque and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Raymond C. Marsh, Jr., her parents, and niece Sandy Sheridan.
