Mary E.
Manubay
October 21, 1936 – August 7, 2023
Mary E. Manubay, age 86, of Hockessin, DE, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 7th, 2023, surrounded by her loving family.
Mary was born in Philadelphia, PA, the daughter of the late Elizabeth MacSparran and Albert Mackey. From the age of 9 years old, Mary was raised on Iron Hill, Newark, DE, by her loving grandparents, the late Toivo and Esther Mackey. Mary graduated from Newark High School and attended the Wilmington General School of Nursing, where she met the love of her life, Dr. Benjamin Manubay. After their marriage in 1955, Mary went on to become a homemaker for their growing family [of five children] and was the bookkeeper for her husband's medical practice and a volunteer for local organizations.
Over her lifetime, Mary enjoyed various passions and hobbies. She enjoyed sewing, ceramics with her Heritage Park friends, taking dance lessons, doing word games, and most recently, watching classic movies into the late hours of the night. She was proud to be an American, but she also loved learning about her family history - especially her Finnish lineage. Her biggest passion was her love for animals, adopting numerous cats and dogs over the years.
In addition to her grandparents and parents, Mary is predeceased by her beloved husband, Benjamin, whom she missed dearly every day.
Mary will be missed by her children, Susan Brawner (Ralph), Paul Manubay (Carol), Donna Cotter, Mary Meadows (Chris), and Brian Manubay (Kevin); grandchildren, Ashley, Tyler, Megan, Michael, Brendan, and Maia; great-grandchildren, Lucy, Asher, and Carter; her sister, Elizabeth Sten; brother, Albert Mackey (Kathy); step-sister, Arlene Jackson (Ken), and cousin, Walter Mackey (Peggy), numerous nieces and nephews, and her faithful cat, Noel.
The family would like to thank the Hockessin EMTs, and the staff of Christiana Hospital and Accent Hospice, for their excellent care and compassion they provided to our mother.
Services for Mary will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Mary's name to the Humane Animal Partners at www.humaneanimalpartners.org
