Obituary

Mary Lou Seichepine (McCartney), 79, of Wilmington, DE, died peacefully on November 10, 2023, surrounded by her family. Mary Lou was born Mary Louise McCartney in 1944 to father, Francis Xavier McCartney and mother, Mary Josephine McCartney in Wilmington, Delaware.

Raised in the Wilmington neighborhood of Happy Valley, Mary Lou attended Sacred Heart School before going on to graduate from St. Elizabeth's High School in 1962. She then attended St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing and graduated as a Registered Nurse. Nursing proved to be a perfect choice of vocation given Mary Lou's genuine concern for the welfare of all people. Mary Lou began work as a licensed RN with Delaware Visiting Nurses - a job she quickly came to love.

Mary Lou's love for children eventually moved her to take a job at The Terry Center caring for children with disabilities, mainly Autism. During this time, she found love with Larry Seichepine whom she had known since grade school. Mary Lou and Larry were married in October 1970.

A year later, they welcomed not one, but two little bundles of joy: twins Keith and Danielle. Although Mary Lou loved nursing and the children in her care, she quickly realized that being a mother of twins required tremendous effort, so she stepped aside from her nursing career to be a full-time mom and homemaker. She embraced these new roles with enthusiasm and genuine love. For example, her children have fond memories of how she would actively play together with them whether it was with dolls or pretend baking or toy cars.

Although Catholic from childhood, Mary Lou began to study the Bible with Jehovah's Witnesses in the mid-1970's, and she was thrilled to finally learn the answers to the questions she had often pondered concerning the reasons behind mankind's suffering, injustice, aging and death. Mary Lou was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses on November 17, 1979. She remained a zealous and faithful Witness for the remainder of her life.

In 1981, Mary Lou and Larry were overjoyed to welcome the birth of their third child, Adrienne. Mary Lou worked hard to train her children to love and respect Jehovah God and the principles in his word the Bible. At the same time, Mary Lou remained involved in each of her children's school activities, often volunteering at their schools including the high school library. At times, she worked as a substitute school nurse within the Brandywine School District.

Mary Lou is fondly remembered by her children for her tireless efforts as a mother by such things as rising early each school day to prepare and eat a nice breakfast with her children. And in the lunches she prepared, a handwritten note of encouragement awaited each child at lunchtime. Mary Lou's love of family was evident in all she did for and with them.

In 2002, Mary Lou began a new endeavor as an archivist at the Museum of Business History & Technology where she eagerly worked cataloging a vast collection of early typewriters and other machines until officially retiring in December 2015. During these years, Mary Lou also had embarked upon learning Mandarin Chinese for the purpose of conversing with the growing population of Chinese residents she met in her volunteer ministry work. This resulted in her joining the Wilmington Chinese Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses where she attended for the last decade.

Mary Lou's many interests and hobbies included reading, crocheting, sewing, cooking and baking. She also enjoyed solving crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles along with watching her favorite game shows such as Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune. Mary Lou also had an appreciation for gardening and Jehovah God's many creative works including plants and flowers. Her favorites were Hydrangeas, Roses and Lilies of the Valley. In recent years, she enjoyed observing the rich variety of animals that lived among the woods in her backyard including multiple woodpeckers and songbirds. In addition, she enjoyed feeding deer, foxes, rabbits and other animals (except the squirrels) outside her windows.

She is survived by her husband of over fifty years, Larry Seichepine, and children, Keith (Grace), Danielle (Manny), Adrienne (Josh) and her grandson, Vaughan, and her sister, Maggie Lazartic. She is preceded in death by her older sister, Patricia Shahan, beloved brother-in-law, Joseph Lazartic, Sr. and her dearly missed nephew, Joseph (Joey) Lazartic, Jr. She had a total of seven nephews and one niece whom she loved.

Although we are filled with tremendous sorrow that our dear Mary Lou has fallen asleep in death, the family takes comfort in a promised, earthly resurrection of our dead loved ones when we will see and hold her again (John 5:28,29). Mary Lou closed her eyes with a solid faith in the promised restored earth wherein sickness, suffering, old age and injustice are no more as stated at Revelation 21:3,4.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude for the outpouring of love and support both recently as well as throughout Mary Lou's cancer battle. The numerous meals, cards, phone calls, flowers and text messages have meant more than we can express. On behalf of Mary Lou, the family also conveys their utmost gratitude for the kind & professional care provided by Delaware Hospice, as well as Dr. Jamal Misleh, MD, Nicole Vines, NP-C, and Jessica (RN) along with the staff at Medical Oncology Hematology Consultants within the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center in Newark, DE.
