Obituary

Mary Ann Connell, of Newark, Delaware, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family, on June 7, 2026.

Born in Wilmington, she was the daughter of the late Theresa (Fortugna) Schiavello and Joseph Schiavello. Mary Ann was a graduate of Wilmington High School and spent time working in public administration for New Castle County in addition to being a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. In 1972, Mary Ann met the love of her life, Bill, beginning a partnership that would span more than 50 years. Mary Ann enjoyed many traditions with her family, including annual Thanksgiving trips to Disney World. She was a passionate Philadelphia sports fan and a devoted supporter of the Eagles, proudly holding season tickets for years and enjoying many fun tailgates in Lot F. Mary Ann spent many years volunteering to support her community, including coaching cheerleading at St. Mark's High School and St. John the Beloved School. Her commitment to her teams extended far beyond the sidelines, and she remained actively involved in coaching until the time of her passing.

Nothing brought Mary Ann greater happiness than her family, especially her beloved granddaughters, who were truly the pride and joy of her life. She treasured every moment spent with them and delighted in watching them grow. She will also be remembered for the special bond she shared with her cherished Yorkie, Lucy.

Mary Ann is survived by her husband of 49 years, William J. Connell; her daughter, Mary Beth Connell and daughter and son-in-law, Kristy and Mark Hutton; her granddaughters, Ava, Ellie, and Grace; her siblings, Carol Bors, Michael Schiavello, David Schiavello, and Joseph Schiavello; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends who became family. In addition to her parents, Mary Ann was predeceased by her brother-in-law, Robert Bors.
