Marie D. Harris, age 86, of Newark, passed away peacefully at home on December 10, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. Born in Wilmington, Marie was the daughter of the late Elizabeth (Mullin) and John Patrick Dougherty. She graduated from St. Paul's Commercial School and worked for Diamond State Telephone and Delaware Power and Light as a young woman. Marie later returned to work at Delaware Charter and Guarantee after raising her four children until retiring to care for her mother.Marie wed William K. Harris on November 9, 1957. The couple settled in Stanton where they raised their family. After the death of her beloved husband, Marie found a wonderful group of friends with whom she traveled to destinations throughout the world. Marie's greatest joy in her later life was her 9 grandchildren. She took pride in their many accomplishments and enjoyed the happiness and life they shared with her. She was a member of St. John the Beloved parish, the Diocesan Mother's Guild, the Red Hat Society and the Wednesday Card Club.Marie was predeceased by her husband, William K. Harris, Sr. 1993. Marie is survived by her children and their spouses, William and Karen Harris of Wilmington, Teri and Paul Drake of Wilmington, Gail and Tom Webster of Newark (with whom Marie lived for the last 2 years), and Diane and Scot Behnke of Newark. She is also survived her grandchildren, Kathy and Bryan Harris, Stephanie and Matthew Drake, Tommy and Emily Webster, Samantha, Liam and Jordan Behnke, many nieces and nephews, her brother James (Ann) Dougherty and brother-in-law Donald Harris. The family extends special thanks to her nieces Stephanie Harris, who provided loving care and comfort, and Marybeth Wroten, for her spiritual support.A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, December 20, 2018 at 11:30 A.M. at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington DE 19808, where friends may call from 10 A.M. to 11:15 A.M. Burial will follow at All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Carcinoid Cancer Foundation or the American Kidney Foundation.
