Margarethe Schmid, 99, of Newark, Delaware passed on January 3, 2021. Margarethe was born on October 10, 1921. As a young girl, she watched as World War II erupted around her. Living in Michelstadt, Germany (50 miles from Frankfurt) B-17 bombers would fly overhead on their way to destroy industry in Frankfurt. Many of her friends were picked up and taken to the Western and Eastern front, never to be heard from again.
After the war, Alex J. Schmid (deceased) a sergeant in the U.S. Army started an enlistedman's club in Michelstadt with Margarethe as an employee. They ended up getting married and came back to the U.S., with Margarethe as a war bride. They were together for 48 years until Alex's death in 1996.
She loved going to Oak Grove and St. Thomas Senior Centers and was awarded for her many contributions.
Margarethe is survived by a son, Alex. J. of Newark; and her brother, Egon, in Germany.
Margarethe will be buried alongside her husband at the Delaware Veterans Cemetery in Bear, DE.
