Margaret T.
Hemming
February 15, 1928 — December 20, 2021
Margaret T. Hemming (Peggy) of Wilmington, DE passed away quietly on December 20, 2021 at the age of 93. She was born in Salisbury, Maryland on February 15, 1928 and was the daughter of the late Larston Sherman (Ike) Townsend and Kathryn (Kitty) Estelle Bennett.
She was the wife of Ian N. Hemming with whom she shared 62 years of marriage and often referred to our father as her "best friend." Ian Hemming passed away on November 20, 2011. They had known each other since they were 5 years old.
She is survived by her three children, Pamela H. Taraboletti, Stuart B. Hemming both of Wilmington and Margaret H. (Meg) and husband Chuck Jette' of Santa Barbara, CA, and her sister, Susan T. Kluge of East Aurora, New York.
Peggy was blessed with five grandchildren whom she adored; Jonathan R. Taraboletti of PA, Katherine L. Hemming of DE, Emily J. Schwab of CA, Kaylan T. Kelly of AZ, and Whitney M. Jetté of CO.
She is also survived by 7 beautiful great-grandchildren; Tyler, Ty, Lillian, Jackson, Peyton, Penelope and Kooper.
Peggy grew up in Salisbury, Maryland and attended Sullins College in Bristol, Virginia. She married her husband Ian on August 27, 1949 and then relocated to Charlottesville, VA where her husband attended the University of Virginia, graduating, in 1951. They began their journey together with the DuPont Company in 1952 and eventually settled in Wilmington, Delaware, a place they have always loved and called home.
Peggy, as her friends and family called her, loved the Eastern Shore and spent many of her summers as a young girl in Ocean City, Md. She loved to read, travel and was an avid golfer and very involved with the Junior Golf Clinic Program at the Kennett Square Country Club in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.
Peggy was a dedicated Junior Board member with the Christiana Hospital in Newark, Delaware, where she has remained a member since joining the Junior Board in 1971.
She was also the proud recipient of the Susan G. Komen Award. Once asked if she thought of herself as a "Survivor" having beaten Breast Cancer herself, she replied, "No, I was lucky. I had incredible staff at Christiana Hospital and the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center who supported me in my journey. I wasn't just lucky, I was blessed!"
The family would like to thank everyone for the care that our mother, grandmother & great grandmother received at Christiana Hospital and Cadia Rehabilitation Center in Wilmington, DE.
We are especially grateful to the Cadia staff for providing our mother's last days filled with Kindness, Dignity and Compassion.
Thank you!
A "Celebration" of her life will be private per our mother's request.
In lieu of flowers contributions to the Junior Board of Christiana Hospital and Helen F. Graham Cancer Center are greatly appreciated.
