Joseph R.
Truitt, Jr.
February 14, 1937 – February 25, 2026
Beloved husband and father, Joseph R. Truitt, Jr., age 89, of Wilmington, DE, passed away at Christiana Hospital on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Joseph was born in Wilmington, DE, the son of the late Margaret (Brynner) and Joseph R. Truitt, Sr. He graduated from P.S. DuPont High School in 1955 and later earned an Arts Degree from the Philadelphia College of Art. He also served his country honorably in the Army National Guard.
Joe was known for being a true do-it-yourself craftsman. He was always ready to tackle any problem with his trusty pocketknife or his collection of tools. His curiosity and skill spanned many areas-from lock picking and safe cracking to home improvement and construction. He built both a beach house and a solar home in Delaware, reflecting his creativity, resourcefulness, and determination.
Joseph was a caring and devoted father who was always willing to help his family, neighbors, and anyone in need. He was known for his quick wit, warm personality, and ability to connect easily with people.
He served his community as president of the Richardson Park Civic Association for several years and was also a member of the Wilmington Rotary Club. Professionally, Joseph worked for George D. Hanby Office Furniture Store, where he rose to Executive Manager of Sales. Over more than 30 years, he provided office furniture systems to many of Delaware's major businesses and banks.
Joseph is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Jean Long Truitt. He is also survived by his children Joseph R. III, Jeffrey, Stacy, Sara, and Peter; nine grandchildren; and six great grand children. In addition, he leaves behind his four siblings: Cathy, Patricia, Barbara, and John. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Funeral services for Joseph will be held privately.
