Obituary

On Sunday, May 12th, Joseph Wilbur Smith Sr. passed away peacefully at the age of 81 with his children by his side.

Joseph, affectionately known as "Smitty", was born on April 23, 1943, in Wilmington, Delaware.  He was a Teamster for 28 years while working for Miller's Furniture and then worked at Delaware Park for ten years before retiring. He took great pride in instilling a strong work ethic.

Joseph was immensely proud of his family, believing it to be his greatest treasure. He was a loving and supportive father and grandfather He was a loyal and caring friend to many, always willing to lend a hand. He was passionate about the Phillies and Eagles and making others feel special. He relished being the life of the party and spreading holiday cheer!

He battled Parkinson's Disease for many years, courageously trying to maintain his independence despite the odds. As it progressed, he gracefully learned to accept the changes and found new ways  to communicate with people using subtle grins, fist pumps and hugs. He was a gentle soul, with a big heart who felt respect and appreciation for his caregivers. He continued to connect and show love until the very end.

Joseph was preceded in death by his mother Louise Smith; his father Venton Smith; his sisters Delores Hutchins and Lois Yeager; and his great grandson Bret Joseph Smith. He is survived by his children Joseph W. Smith Jr, Louise Hyatt (Dan), Theresa Haas (David) and Jeff Smith (Shelli); his grandchildren, Ryan Haas (Tania), Samual Haas, Natalie Lewis (Evan), Lindsay Williamson (Rob), Daniel Hyatt, Emily Lewis (Nathan), Julia Smith and Mason Smith; four great grandchildren, and his brother Venton (Jack) Smith. The family wishes to thank Compassionate Care Hospice and Sunrise of Wilmington for their amazing support.
