January 21, 1948 – November 15, 2022
John F. Tharan, age 74, of Wilmington passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at Accent (Seasons) Hospice surrounded by his family.
John was born in Philadelphia to the late Rita Sauers Tharan and the late James G. Tharan. He attended St. Ann's grade school, and Salesianum School, and graduated from Wilmington High School in 1966. John received his Associates Degree from Delaware Tech. After high school John enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served his country proudly in the Vietnam War. He was a Delaware State Trooper and after retiring worked in management for various security companies. John had two favorite part-time jobs that he enjoyed very much. He worked as an usher at the Blue Rocks and as a Security Rep for the NBA.
John enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling and watching sports, especially the Boston Red Sox and the Miami Dolphins. He was happiest when he was playing golf.
John will be dearly missed by his wife of 45 years, Deborah (Ward) Tharan; his children and their spouses, John Tharan and Sarah Ponzio of Media, PA, Brian Tharan of Newark, and Kristen and Randy Reid of Havertown, PA; his grandchildren, Brooks, Tatum and Adelynn; and his sister, Marie McVey of Lewes, DE.
The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation and gratitude to the compassionate doctors, nurses and staff at Christiana Care Hospital and Accent Hospice.
Relatives and friends are invited to call at the MEALEY FUNERAL HOME, 2509 Limestone Road, Wilmington on Tuesday evening from 5 to 7 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Ann's Church, 2013 Gilpin Avenue, Wilmington on Wednesday morning at 10:00 AM. Burial will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
