John A. Spera, "Uncle John", 93, of Wilmington passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, July 3, 2016. John was the last of seven children born to Josephine (LaRocca) and Ross Spera in Upper Darby, PA. He served on Destroyer Escort, USS Fiske, and earned a Purple Heart, Victory Medal and others in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Destroyer Escort Sailors Union of America, VFW and attended Naval Reunions throughout the country. He was a proud member of "The Greatest Generation." He spent most of his career in the family trucking business. He enjoyed watching horse racing at the Turf Club. Uncle John was a pilot and loved to drive luxury cars. John is survived by his niece, Maryanne Mance (Terry) of Wilmington; his nephew, Joseph Parsio (Jacqueline) of Lansdowne, PA; his great nephews, P.J. Bale (Lisa) and Joshua Parsio (Katie), his great nieces, Beth Kirker (Sean), Allison Carter and Maria Lucey; numerous nieces and nephews and good friend, Kim Hagen. John's family would like to thank the staff at Rockland Place for the kindness given to Uncle John. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 9, 2016, at 11 AM at Corpus Christi Church, 901 New Road, Elsmere, DE, where friends may call after 10 AM. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery Yeadon, PA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Disabled American Veterans, 183 South Street, Camden, DE 19934.
