John A. "Jack" Smith, age 90, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 13, 2023.
Jack was born in Wilmington July 23, 1932, son of the late Anna Mary Halfern and Russell N. Smith. Jack finished high school and worked for Hercules and Three Little Bakers Golf Course. He then began a career with the United States Post Service where he eventually retired after many years of dedicated service. Jack was the local and state President of the American Postal Workers Union, where he became a friend of President Joe Biden. He coached and played on championship softball, baseball and basketball teams. His Boys Club Junior team won an interstate area championship and his intermediate team won a tournament in Baltimore. Jack played on the Post Office golf team that won the industrial league seven times. He also officiated high school football for 31 years and high school basketball for 26 years. Jack's greatest joy in life was his family, and he will be missed dearly by those who were closest to him.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Desmond Smith, his brother, Russell N. Smith, Jr and his niece, Jill Casey. He is survived by his daughter, Donna Knox (James); grandsons, Krystian and Sean Knox; twin sister, Janet Casey; nephews, Russell Smith and Todd Casey; as well as his niece, Kathy Smith.
A visitation for John will be held Friday, April 21, 2023 at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington, DE 19808, from 11 AM to 12 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 12 PM. Burial will follow at All Saints Cemetery in Wilmington, DE.
