John P. Rusnak Jr., age 90, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, September 30, 2026. A respected educator, accomplished wrestling coach, and devoted mentor, John left a lasting impression on generations of students and athletes.
John is survived by his wife, Carolyn “Carol” Rusnak. John was born in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania. He was the son of the late Mary and John P. Rusnak Sr. In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his sisters, Martha and Mary Lousie. John is also survived by his brother, Ed and Ed’s wife, Louise; his godson, James “Jim” Brazill; his nephews, Ed Rusnak and Keith Monroe; and his nieces, Vicky Mikell, Mary Monroe, and Jacqueline Monroe.
John earned his bachelor’s degree from Penn State University in 1958 and his master’s degree from Villanova University in 1961. At Penn State, he was an athlete competing in football and wrestling.
He began his teaching career in his hometown of Philipsburg, Pennsylvania. He later taught at Unionville and P.S. duPont High Schools before joining the science department at Salesianum School. He dedicated 37 years to Salesianum, where his commitment to education extended well beyond the classroom.
At Salensinum, John served as the freshman football coach and head wrestling coach for many year. As head wrestling coach, John led several of his wrestlers to individual state championships and captured the school’s first team state championship in 1984. In recognition of his contributions, Salesianum named its renovated wrestling room the John P. Rusnak Wrestling Room. He served on the Delaware State Wrestling Committee for more than 50 years and was inducted into the Delaware State Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2001. Although he often declared that each year on the committee would be his last, his dedication to the sport never waned.
John was a mentor and father figure to many of his students and athletes. A true gentleman, he taught by example, emphasizing respect for others and sportsmanship. His influence endured long after his students left the classroom and his wrestlers stepped off the mat.
In retirement, John enjoyed golfing, visits to Delaware Park, and line dancing with his wife, Carol. Together, they enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends.
A mass of Christian burial and celebration of life are being scheduled. Details will be shared as soon as arrangements are finalized. The family is grateful for the love and support they have received and look forward to gathering with all whose lives John touched to honor his memory. In lieu of flowers or donations, please take someone you love out for ice cream in John’s memory.
