Obituary

John J. Hogan, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2023, at the age of 82.  John is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Kathleen, and his two children, Bill (Karen) of Collegeville, Pennsylvania, and Alicia (Jack) of Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania, as well as his pride and joy: his five grandchildren, Alyssa & Rachel Hogan, and John, Colleen, & Brendan Murphy. He is also survived by his three loving sisters, Mary Sheeran, Rosellen Hogan, and Kathy Hogan, and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary Ellen and Mike Fitzgerald. John leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews.

The son of Mary and John Hogan and the oldest of four children, John was born on February 10, 1940, and grew up in Jackson Heights, New York. He graduated from Archbishop Molloy High School and continued his education at Cathedral College, where he studied in the seminary for seven years.

It was at The World's Fair, where he worked in the summer of 1965, that he met the love of his life, Kathleen, and decided that he wanted to be married and have a family. After leaving the seminary, John married Kathleen in July of 1967. They made their home Carle Place, New York, a close-knit community that John and Kathleen found perfect for raising a family.

While maintaining a career as a commercial real estate appraiser, John also enjoyed becoming involved in his community, serving for ten years on the Carle Place school board as well as being a member of the Carle Place Civic Association, and a eucharistic minister at Our Lady of Hope Church. Through his involvement in the community, John made many lifelong friends … Those friendships meant the world to him.

Though both native New Yorkers, John and Kathleen moved in 2004 to be closer to their children. They made Wilmington, Delaware, their new home. John endured a great many health issues between 2006 and 2023, but he never complained. Often referred to as "The Energizer Bunny" by his wife and children, he "just kept going." His endless courage and amazing selflessness were beyond admirable; an example of strength for all who knew him.

A memorial service will be held on March 11, 2023, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church on Weldin Road in Wilmington, DE. Friends and loved ones are invited to greet the family at 10:00 AM. A memorial mass will follow at 11:00 AM.
