John J. (Jack) Hogan, born in Wilmington 9/16/1932, son of the late John J. and Helen O'Neill Hogan, who was born in County Clare, Ireland. He was predeceased by siblings Helen Simpson, Rita Rybicki and Edward Slavin. Jack graduated from St. Elizabeth High School, class of 1950. He retired from the DuPont Experimental Station after 43 years of service. It was at the Experimental Station where Jack met his wife of 63 years, Barbara Ann Dougherty. Together they raised four children, each of whom he is extremely proud. Jack is survived by Barbara, the love of his life, and children, Kathleen Hogan Gerstley and her husband Thomas, of Middletown DE, Patricia Hogan Cossart and her husband Mark, of Elko GA, John J. Hogan and his wife Karen, of Milton GA, and Michael T. Hogan and his wife, Elizabeth of Roswell GA.
Jack was most happy at the many gatherings for family events, vacations and the countless hours attending sporting events and activities of his thirteen grandchildren: Matthew, Sean, Connor, Jane and Dylan Gerstley, Patrick, Sarah and Jake Cossart, Kevin and Caitlin Hogan, Erin, Colin and Owen Hogan. He was also most proud and excited about the birth of his 3 great grandchildren, Lennon Gerstley, Lucy Gerstley and Grady Cossart.
When his children were young, Jack served as a volunteer coach in baseball, basketball and soccer. Jack was a lifetime sports fan. His favorite sports teams were Notre Dame, UD, Navy, Eagles and Phillies.
Jack was very proud of his Irish Catholic heritage. During his retirement, Jack volunteered for 22 years at the Emmanuel Dining Room, 11 years as a mentor in the HOSTS program at Marbrook School, and 25 years as a counselor in AARP's Tax-Aide program, Tax Counseling for the Elderly. Jack served as District Coordinator in New Castle County for 15 years.
A Visitation will be held on Friday May 2nd, 2025 from 10 A.M. to 11 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial to begin at 11 A.M. at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Catholic Church, 10 Old Church Road Wilmington, DE 19807. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Emmanuel Dining Room ministryofcaring.org or in memory of Lennon Abigail Gerstley, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
