Obituary

John E McCormick was a devoted husband, a loving father, a cherished brother, a beloved grandfather, and a good friend to many. He passed away peacefully with his wife and 2 sons by his side on December 5th.

John was born on November 28, 1936, to Leo and Beatrice McCormick in the heart of Buffalo, New York. Growing up with his sister Colleen and brother Dennis, John's life was steeped in the rich traditions of his Catholic-Irish heritage. From an early age, he exhibited a special gift for storytelling that captivated all who had the pleasure of listening.

His narratives were akin to the comedic stylings of Bob Newhart, woven with keen observations of common human nature, and laced with humorous insights. With animated gestures and sound effects, John could regale us with tales that not only entertained but also resonated deeply. Those stories, filled with his wit and charm, had a magical way of leaving us in stitches... always asking for more, and, without fail, he'd oblige.

He attended Canisius College in Buffalo, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 1958.  In 1959 he became a 1st Lieutenant in the Army, stationed at Joliet Arsenal in Illinois and while there, he met 20 yr old Sharon Olson at a VFW hall dance. It was love at first sight. John married Sharon in 1960. For 63 years, Sharon stood by John's side, serving as his partner, confidante, and the love of his life. John's journey through life was inseparable from Sharon's unwavering presence and support. Together, they nurtured a love that withstood the tests of time, becoming a beacon of inspiration for all who knew them. As partners in every sense of the word, their bond was unbreakable, a testament to dedication, commitment, and enduring love.

Together, they raised five children-Brian, Cathleen (Bill Haas), John, Thomas & Sarah (Anthony Bell)-and became grandparents to 8 grandchildren: Christina Haas, Samuel Haas, J. Bennett Haas, Olivia Haas, & Ava Bell, Liam Bell, Charlotte Bell, Sophia Bell. Their love and guidance will continue to resonate through generations, a legacy of love and devotion that remains etched in their hearts forever.

John was a dedicated member of the fraternal order of Knights of Columbus, as a 4th degree knight, he served as Grand Knight twice for St. Mary's in Hockessin, and was awarded Sir Knight of the Year in 2017. He helped masterminded fundraisers for local charities, and Lenten fish fry's for many years, an event beloved by the entire community. His devotion to both his faith and the congregation was unwavering.

Professionally, John excelled as a chemist, working over 40 years for ICI, Americas in Wilmington, Delaware. John also worked at Bethlehem Steel, the Linde Corporation, and Atlas Chemical in various positions.  His precision and dedication mirrored his meticulous approach, a trait that extended beyond the laboratory into his cherished home garden.

The garden, a testament to his patience and care, flourished under his attentive hands. Tomatoes, rhubarb, carrots, onions, and more thrived under his watchful eye, a bounty enjoyed by family & neighbors.  He even sold his excess rhubarb to the local produce stand on his way to church.

John was also a maestro at heart, finding solace and joy in the ivory keys of his piano. His face lit up whenever he played, his eyes twinkling with his passion for music. To his family, his playing was a testament to the happiness he enjoyed through music that we enjoyed as well.

Yet, beyond his professional achievements and green-thumbed expertise, John's greatest legacy lies in the way he loved. He emulated the love of Christ, demonstrating to us all how to extend grace, endure hardships, and cherish each other.

Let us remember John Edward McCormick for the laughter he brought, the wisdom he shared, the love he bestowed, and the indelible mark he left on our hearts. Though he may no longer walk among us, his spirit and legacy will continue to thrive within each life he touched.

Rest in peace, dear John. Your memory will forever be a blessing to us all.
