Herman C. "Dutch" Hanel Jr., age 81, of Newark, DE, passed away surrounded by family on Tuesday, September 27, 2016.He was the son of the late Lila Gibson and Herman C. Hanel, Sr. He graduated in 1952 from Paulsboro H.S. in Paulsboro, NJ, and graduated with honors in 1954 from Goldey Beacom School of Business in Wilmington, DE.Dutch, called "Dusty" by his beloved grandchildren, served on active duty in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1959 and was in inactive reserves until 1962. He then went to work for the Bank of Delaware where he met the love of his life, Carol, his wife of 55 years. He raised his family in Wilmington, DE, and also for some years in Orwigsburg, PA. Prior to retirement in 1999, he was an accountant for Bruce Industrial. He was happy to retire near family and friends in Newark, DE.He is survived by his wife, Carol A. (Krupa) Hanel, four daughters, Kimberly (William) Tabbert of Glen Burnie, MD, Vicki (Bernard) Ferguson of Acworth, GA, Laurie Hanel of Carlisle, PA, and Valerie Warrington of Newark, DE; five grandchildren, Casey, Scott, Chase, Emma, and Ryan; his sister, Carole (Richard) Jenkins of KY and his brother John "Jack" Hanel of FL.His great joy in life was his family. He enjoyed the beach and travel, especially the cruises he took with his wife, closest family and lifelong friends. His daily pleasure was the crossword puzzle, which he took pride in completing to perfection. He always enjoyed hosting family and friends in his home. His family will remember him as a loving, kind, gentle, and a 'take care of business' man. He would do, and did, anything for anyone, quietly and compassionately. A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, October 4, 2016, at 11:30 a.m. in the Holy Angels Roman Catholic Parish, 82 Possum Park Road, Newark, DE, where visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery.In lieu of floral gifts, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society at https://donate.cancer.org/index.
