Obituary

Herbert V. Blackwelder, Sr., age 91, of West Grove, PA, passed away due to complications from a broken heart on Monday, January 21, 2019 at Jennersville Hospital. His beloved wife of nearly 70 years, Mary "Tena" (Davis) Blackwelder, predeceased him in November.Born in Concord, NC, Herbert was the son of the late Ralph N. and Martha (Bost) Blackwelder. In 1946-47, he served his country proudly in the Army with the 538th Field Artillery Battalion at Camp Markins in the Philippine Islands. Soon after leaving the military he met Tena Davis in the small mill town of Clinton, SC. She quickly became the love of his life and they were married in 1949. They began their life together in a small trailer on the campus of Clemson University. After graduating with a degree in Architecture, he soon was lured to Delaware by the DuPont Company. He would work for DuPont for 35 years, beginning as a Draftsman and ending his career as Principle Consulting Architect. To provide Tena with the life she deserved and to keep his five boys fed, he did a great deal of work outside his job with DuPont. He designed many private homes and worked on numerous local projects, including buildings at Longwood Gardens and the Brandywine Zoo. He was also well known for his architectural renderings of many local buildings. After retirement in 1985, he enjoyed traveling, playing golf, and painting. He primarily painted sea and landscapes in watercolor. His artwork has been shown in juried exhibits with many pieces in both private and corporate collections. During his long life, he overcame many challenges and accomplished many things but he was most proud of the men his five boys became. He will be dearly missed by his sons and their spouses: Herbert V., Jr. and Kathleen of Avondale, PA; Ralph B. and Lisa of Young Harris, GA; Barrett O. and Elizabeth of Wilmington, DE; Robert B. and Yolanda of Chula Vista, CA; and, Bradley D. and Kimberly of Landenberg, PA; his cousin, Charles R.
