Harry Earl Fischer, Jr. of Claymont, Delaware died of heart failure on Tuesday, February 2, 2021. He was 93 years old. He was the youngest child born to the late Harry E. Sr. and Grace Lee Culver Fischer. He grew up on the west side of Wilmington and attended Brown Vocational School. As a teenager, he was a member of a drum and bugle corps affiliated with a local VFW post. He was also a member of the Delaware State Guard. At age 17 he enlisted in the Navy and proudly served his country during WWII aboard the USS Buckley (DE-51) until it was decommissioned. He then joined the Naval Reserve. He returned to Wilmington and began his long career in the construction industry as a carpenter working for a number of local contractors. In the mid-1970s he decided to start his own construction business. He was a skilled craftsman who took great pride in his work. He enjoyed all things carpentry, from building bird houses with the kids to doing custom carpentry projects for his many satisfied clients. He passed on his carpentry skills to his son, Patrick, who carries on the tradition. In November 1948 he married Veronica T. Carroll. In 1953 they moved to Claymont, where they raised their family. He enjoyed spending summer weekends with his family at their cottage in Wildwood, NJ. After retirement he was able to spend more time relaxing at the beach. He and Veronica always enjoyed traveling together, whether road trips to visit family, or vacations to farther destinations. His more recent trips were shorter, driving to his cottage or sometimes just to Fox Point Park to watch the ships on the river. He enjoyed his independence until the end. He was very proud of his large family and enjoyed spending as much time with them as he could. He also enjoyed family reunions where he could catch up with his extended family. Harry was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Irene Phillips, Jennie Lee Pemberton and Harriet Fischer; his AFS exchange student son, Wilfried van Hauwermeiren; and his wife Veronica, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage until her death in 2004. He is survived by his five children, Mary E. Wardius and her husband Ralph, John T. and his wife Melanie, Veronica Ann, Patrick J. and his wife Sandy and Daniel E. and his wife Betsy; 12 grandchildren, Catherine (Ian), Christopher (Nikki), Jennifer (Frank), Tanya (Brad), Andrew, Alex, Justin (Mandi), Kristin (John), Patrick, Chastity (Tony), Daniel (Constance) and Thomas; and 15 great-grandchildren, Emma, Katie, Carly, Clay, Grace, Austin, Caroline, Rowan, Arden, Odessa, Jacob, Isaac, Adam, Kaylie and Allison. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at the Mealey Funeral Home, 2509 Limestone Road Wilmington, DE 19808 from 6-8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 11, 2021 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 3200 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703, followed by interment in Cathedral Cemetery 2400 Lancaster Avenue, Wilmington. Masks and social distancing are required at each location.
