George-Anne Oliver
Kelly
July 16, 1924 – May 17, 2023
George-Anne Oliver Kelly ("Jan"), age 98, of Hockessin, passed away peacefully surrounded by family members on Wednesday, May 17, 2023.
Jan was born in Beloit, WI, daughter of Mary-Maude (Thompson) and William A. Oliver. She graduated from high school in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, then the University of Michigan in 1946 with a bachelor's degree in Zoology.
After working in scientific laboratories, Jan focused on managing a household and raising her five children. For more than 30 years, Jan organized neighborhood car-pooling for after school activities; provided chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, and sugar cookies for the neighborhood children; and was the primary host and delegator-in-chief for the extended Oliver family Thanksgiving weekends. Jan also was an extremely active community volunteer, as she held several positions at the Unionville School Parents Association, held several office and education positions at Hanover Presbyterian Church, served as a president of the Southern Chester County League of Women Voters, was a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants, and was active in the Jane Austen Society of North America. In addition to her parents, Jan was predeceased by Ralph E. Kelly, her husband of 64 years; son, Charles H. Kelly; and brothers William A. Oliver and Charles M. Oliver.
Jan is survived by her daughter, Mary-Margaret Kelly Bickhart (Bill); daughter-in-law, Leslie Kelly; sons R. Michael Kelly (Shirley Hill), Thomas O. Kelly (Annie), and Steven W. Kelly (Tara); twelve grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Helen Oliver; and numerous nieces, nephews, and close family friends.
Services will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations in Jan's name to the William A. Oliver Endowed Scholarship, University of Illinois Foundation, 1305 West Green Street, Urbana, IL 61801-2962 (annually for an undergraduate student in civil and environmental engineering); the Brandywine Conservancy and Museum of Art, PO Box 141, Chadds Ford, PA 19317; or ACTS Signature Hospice Delaware, 726 Loveville Road, Hockessin, DE 19707.
