Obituary

Elena Patricia O'Neill, known fondly to her family as "Aunt Eileen", formerly of Whiting, NJ, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2025.

Born in Glinsk. Co. Galway, Ireland, Eileen was the daughter of the late Margaret (Keavney) and Patrick O'Neill. She was the last surviving child of Margaret and Patrick, predeceased by her siblings Mary (O'Brien), Tommy Joe, Beatrice (McKeague), Lawrence (Sonny), Margaret (Peggy McDermott), Patrick (Pake) and Martin. She leaves behind many nieces, nephews, grand and great-grand nieces and nephews in Ireland, the UK and the US.

Eileen was educated in the UK, becoming a Sister and teaching in England before leaving for missionary work in Argentina. She immigrated to the United States in 1977. She received her MS degree from Fordham University in NYC and spent many years working in education in New York City.

She retired to Whiting, NJ, in 1995, where she found herself busier than ever. She took part in many activities in her parish church. She ran the Irish American Club in Whiting, putting together many shows, dances and opportunities to teach about her beloved Irish culture

Eileen was a beloved sister, aunt, teacher, and friend. She was a remarkable woman who left an indelible mark on all who knew her. She was an amazing teacher, a scholar, a walking encyclopedia of family history, and a beautiful, caring, and wise soul whose presence was always felt.

When Eileen immigrated to America, she carried with her the rich traditions of her Irish heritage and a deep commitment to her faith, family, and community. A lifelong learner with a creative mind and a way with words, she had the rare gift of being able to teach both from the head and the heart. Her students, family, and friends often turned to her not just for knowledge but for insight, advice, and encouragement.

As a teacher, Eileen's impact was profound. Her classroom was a place of discovery, where young minds were inspired by her passion for learning and her unwavering belief in the potential of every child. Beyond academics, she taught lessons of kindness, resilience, and the importance of being a person of integrity.

Eileen was also a strong, dedicated individual whose creative spirit and sharp wit made her a natural storyteller. She kept the family history alive through her vivid recollections, sharing stories of life in Ireland and the adventures that shaped her journey. She was the keeper of traditions, a source of wisdom, and a steadfast guide for those she loved.

Her presence was always felt, whether through her thoughtful words, her calming wisdom, or her infectious laugh. Eileen's faith was her guiding light, and she lived each day with grace, humility, and a deep sense of purpose, always seeking to help others and bring light into the lives of those around her.

Eileen was a wonderful example to all of us. Her life embodied kindness, wisdom, and the power of connection. She taught us to cherish our heritage, value our education, and walk through life with strength, compassion, and humility.

She will be deeply missed by her family in Ireland, UK and the United States, who will hold her memory close and strive to live by her example. Her legacy is one of love, learning, and unwavering faith-a legacy that will live on in all who were blessed to know her.

May she rest in eternal peace, knowing her life's work and love will never be forgotten.Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis-May her faithful soul rest at God's right hand.
