Edwin Sheer Zippe, 82, of Wilmington passed away on Friday, December 22, 2017 after a brief battle with cancer. Born on the family farm in Clayton, Delaware, he was the son of Kurt Schmidt Zippe and Helen Sheer Zippe.A 1954 graduate of Smyrna High School, Ed earned Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from the University of Delaware, and was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity. He retired in 2000 after teaching history at Alexis I. duPont High School for 40 years; his classes were notoriously challenging and he remained in touch with many of his students from across the years. He helped coach many different sports while at AI, most notably football and wrestling, and was also immensely proud of the Academic Bowl teams he mentored.Ed was an involved father and grandfather who faithfully attended sporting events, concerts and plays, and was a beloved kidsitter. In his retirement he enjoyed traveling, reading and writing voraciously, attending concerts, hiking, and spending time with his friends and family and especially his grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Ed was predeceased by his siblings Ernst Zippe, Edith Sutor, Kurt Zippe, Jr. (Johnny) and Isabel Gebhart. He is survived by his children Jane Zippe Putscher (Dave) of Wilmington, Anne Camilli (Jim) of Hockessin, and John Zippe (Kerri) of Newark; grandchildren Carrie and Emily Putscher, Zakk and Leah Camilli and Cole and Ava Zippe; his brother Robert Daniels of Townsend, and former wife Nancy Coale Zippe, as well as many extended family members and dear friends.Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Ed's life at Founders Hall of Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church, 500 McKennan's Church Road, Wilmington on Saturday, December 30th. Visitation with the family will be from 10 am to noon, immediately followed by a brief time of remembrance and then a luncheon. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The Nature Conservancy of Delaware (100 W. 10th St., Suite 1107, Wilmington, DE 19801), or just enjoy a good book.
