Obituary

Edward Reid Wilson, 96, of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, December 17, 2022. He was affectionately known to his friends and family as Reid or Pop. His knack for storytelling, sense of humor, and infectious laugh will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Reid was born near Bonsal, in Chatham County, NC, the son of the late Irma (Massey) and Edward Wilson.  He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and then began a career as a photo engraver for Globe Photo Engraving.  He later worked at the News Journal for over 25 years as an engraving superintendent and purchasing agent. He was a former member of Bethany Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher.

In his fifties, Reid underwent cardiac surgery, which then prompted him to become a volunteer at Christiana Hospital for many years counseling others who were receiving cardiac care. He participated in a walking club at the Christiana Mall, which he thoroughly enjoyed for the heart healthy exercise and friendship.

His interests included traveling and photography. He also liked gardening and bird watching, and was always thinking of new ways to outsmart the squirrels trying to get into his bird feeder. Even into his eighties, he enjoyed taking classes as part of the University of Delaware Lifelong Learning Institute and was always sharing new tidbits of information he learned with his family.

Reid lived a very active life, which helped him to live independently at home until the age of 96.  During the last five years of his life, he was blessed with the help of an incredible caregiver, Adriane Roy.  She became a close friend of Reid and his family, and for whom they are eternally grateful.

Reid was predeceased by his wife, Patsy (Moore) Wilson in 1996; his daughters, Lisa Wilson Farley and Carole Wilson Mashington and his brother, Olin Wilson.

Reid is survived by his sister, Ruth Younts of Austell, GA; his son and daughter-in-law, Joseph Reid Wilson and Mary of Millsboro, DE; his son-in-law Daniel Farley of Marydel, DE; his grandchildren, Rachel Silowka (David), Jessica Sweeten (Scott), Reid Wilson and Laurel Wilson, and his great-grandchildren, Cole, Anna and James.

Funeral services and burial will be held privately at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Christiana Care Heart and Vascular Health.
