Edward J.
Banack
August 16, 1929 – July 9, 2023
Edward J. Banack, age 93, of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on July 9th, 2023.
Born in Wilmington, DE, he was the son of the late Cecelia (Olszewska) and Joseph Banack. Ed grew up in Hedgeville and was extremely proud of his Polish heritage. He graduated from H. Fletcher Brown Vocational High School and went on to honorably serve his country in the 2nd Armored Division stationed at Fort Hood, TX. Following his military service, he worked at General Motors for 40 years where he retired as an inspector on the final line.
Ed was a man of great conviction and it was his devout faith that comforted him in his final days. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Ed and his wife, Rosemary, enjoyed traveling and spoke fondly of their trips to Ireland, California and Caribbean cruises. They also enjoyed going to casinos -whether in Lake Tahoe, Las Vegas, Atlantic City or Delaware Park. Ed loved spending time with his family and always looked for a reason to celebrate with them.
He was lighthearted and quick-witted with a contagious sense of humor. His heart was genuine and he made everyone feel special. He led by example and taught his family to appreciate the simple things in life - like the warmth of the sun on your face, the feeling of rain on your skin, and the refreshing taste of an ice-cold Yuengling on a hot summer's day (smaczny!). He's missed dearly, but lives on in our hearts forever.
In addition to his parents, Ed was predeceased by his siblings, Joseph Banack and Barbara Hall; and his son-in-law, Robert DelCollo. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Rosemary; his children and their spouses, Susan and John Pokoiski, Jane DelCollo, Ann Marie Banack, and Eileen and Chris Konstantino; his grandchildren, Stephanie, Kurt (Mandy), Andrea, Jonathan (Maggie), Ellen, Erin and Andrew; his great grandchildren, Audrey, Mallory, and Blythe; and extended family.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday July 19th, 2023 from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M. at the Mealey Funeral Home, 2509 Limestone Road Wilmington, DE 19808. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday July 20th, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Cedar and Clayton Streets, Wilmington, DE. Burial will follow at All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Elizabeth High School, 1500 Cedar St, Wilmington, DE 19805.
