Obituary

Douglas V. Smith, son of the late Terrance and Sharon Smith, passed away on August 6th, 2021. Born in Seattle, he became a lifelong resident of Delaware and successful entrepreneur. He graduated from Christiana High School in 1977 and received a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Shepherd University in 1981. Doug loved to work and built a flourishing concrete construction business called General Excavating. Doug inspired great loyalty from his crew and always took care of them like family. He was well known and respected throughout the state of Delaware, both personally and professionally. Doug was a wonderful husband, friend, and family member. He was the ultimate provider and supporter of those who needed him. Generous to a fault, he always gave his time and effort to help his family and friends. In his spare time, he was an avid golfer and poker player, taking after his father, who taught him to maintain the consummate poker face. In a similar manner, he didn't often show his deep intelligence. Doug is survived by his loving wife Karla A. Julian, and his daughter Caitlin. He was immensely proud of his daughter, who recently earned her PhD in Psychology, and still called her by her childhood nickname -- "Bud" - into adulthood. He is also survived by his sister Jody, his brother Chris (and his wife Hala), and his sister Eileen (and her husband Jordan). He is also survived by his wife's family, his father and mother-in-law, Robert and Lorraine Julian, his sisters-in-law, Nancy Julian, Lorraine Scott (and her husband Tom), and his brother-in-law, Robert Julian (and his wife Candy), and eight nieces and nephews. Doug was loved and will be greatly missed. Visitation will be held at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 901 Dupont Street, Wilmington, DE, from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM on August 16th, with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:30 AM. Burial will be held privately. Donations in memory of Douglas V. Smith can be made to support the Penn Memory Center Research Fund, Penn Medicine Development, c/o PMC, 3535 Market Street, Suite 750, Philadelphia, PA 19104 or online at Penn Memory Center Research Fund.
