Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Cormetia, who peacefully departed from this world on April 24th, surrounded by loved ones. Cormetia was 80 years old and had been battling cancer for many years with unwavering courage and determination.

Cormetia was born in Stillwater, Oklahoma, the daughter of the late Laura Corrine (Wiechmann) and Willis Homer McBride. After high school, Cormetia moved to Delaware with her first husband, Mike Dunning in 1963. Delaware is where she raised her family and made many lifelong friends. In the mid 1980's Cormetia joined the Wilmington Ski Club. This is when she began a love of skiing and she also met Phil Sweetser. In 1989, Cormetia and Phil were married and moved to Vermont where she lived for the next 30+ years. After Phil's passing, Cormetia moved to Fayetteville NC, then moved to Tazwell, VA. Cormetia had a zest for life. She had an uncanny ability to attract lifelong friends any place she lived. Cormetia loved adventures. She skied down mountains in Switzerland, parasailed in Kitty Hawk, NC, parachuted in Ohio with her nephew, and drove an RV through the State of Alaska while an artist friend illustrated the wildflowers of the beautiful state. This past Fall, she went up in a hot air balloon ride over Lancaster, PA.

Cormetia was a talented seamstress. She loved to make wedding gowns and dresses for family and friends. She also loved to quilt. Her quilts were always treasured gifts made for special occasions. While living in Vermont, Cormetia was the President of the local Quilting club. Her passion for volunteering was evident in her participation in painting a large mural in the small town of Tazwell, Virginia.

Cormetia loved to entertain. Her home in Vermont was always filled with visitors. One day while shopping at the local grocery store, she noticed a group of bikers. After a brief conversation, this group who were riding cross country, stayed with Cormetia and Phil for a few days of R&R, hearty food and a warm place to sleep.  Cormetia's door was always open.

Cormetia was a giver. She cherished opportunities to assist friends in need. She was always the first to offer help with senior care of loved ones and help anyone in need. Her charitable ways didn't end when she passed. Cormetia's final wish was to donate her body to The University of Delaware for research.

In addition to her parents, Cormetia was predeceased by her husband, Phil and daughter, Laura Samuel. Cormetia is survived by her daughter, Mary Cooney (Brian) of Wilmington, DE; son, Michael Dunning (Maureen) of Wilmington, DE; son-in-law, Bill Samuel (Jean Rodenberger); grandchildren, Matthew, Monica, Trevor, Michael, Will and Abby; four great grandchildren; and numerous close family and friends whom she loved.

Services for Cormetia will be held at a later date, burial will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Delaware Humane Society in honor of Cormetia Sweetser.
