Colonel John J.
Mealey, Jr.
August 4, 1933 – March 6, 2025
Colonel John J. Mealey, Jr. (retired) of Berlin, MD, formerly of Wilmington, Delaware, passed peacefully on March 6, 2025, surrounded by his wife, daughters and caretaker. Jack was a dedicated and loving husband, proud father, a true patriot and a man full of integrity with an Irish sense of humor.
Jack was born in Wilmington, the eldest son of the late John J. Mealey Sr. and Anne Romanek Mealey. He graduated from St. Ann's Grade School, Salesianum School, the University of Delaware with his B.S. and Indiana University with an MBA. He worked in the family business, Michael A. Mealey & Sons as a young man. Following his graduation from the University of Delaware, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country for 27 years in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corp and retired with the rank of Colonel.
His career took him and his family to many bases, including Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX, Tripler Amy Medical Center in Hawaii, Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C. and the Pentagon in Arlington, VA. He received numerous military decorations, including the Bronze Star, and did a tour of duty in the Vietman War. After retiring from the military Jack and his wife Joan moved to Chester County, PA, and he worked with SMS Systems (now Siemens) as a consultant for hospital network systems in military hospitals until his retirement.
Jack will be missed by his wife of 68 years, Joan Avery Mealey; his daughters and their spouses, Karen and Robert Cassagnol, Elizabeth Dorsey, Margaret and Mark Hammond, Christine Martindale, and Jacqueline and Joseph Alfonsi; his grandchildren, Meaghan (Ryan), Emmy (Joe), Michael, John, Avery and Leila; his great-grandchildren, Remy, Reese and Ryan Jr.; his sisters, Susan Demusz, and Patricia Edwards; his brother, Robert J. Mealey; his sister-in-law, Mildred Mealey and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Jack was predeceased by his brothers, Michael A., II, Charles F., and Joseph T. Mealey, nephew Michael A., III, his sisters-in-law, Josie Mealey and Eleanor Mealey, and his brothers-in-law, William Edwards and John Demusz.
The visitation will be held at the MEALEY FUNERAL HOME, 2509 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE, on Friday, March 14, 2025, at 12 P.M. to 1 P.M. with funeral services to begin at 1 P.M. Burial with honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Wounded Warrior Project (
Interment Services will be held on Wednesday September 3rd, 2025 at 9 A.M. at Arlington National Cemetery, 1 Memorial Avenue Arlington, Virginia 22211. Please report to the main gates at 1 Memorial Avenue between 8 A.M. and 8:15 A.M. You will be directed to the Administration Building, where a queue line will form. Please park in the queue line labeled "MEALEY" to proceed to the graveside. All drivers should plan on presenting identification when entering the cemetery.
