Clarence Edward (Ed) Lyons
August 11, 1948 – September 4, 2020
Ed Lyons was born in Baltimore, MD to Charles J. and Ethel (Robinson) Lyons. He had a difficult and abusive childhood and at age 16 he left his parents and moved to New Castle, DE and graduated from William Penn High School in 1969.
Ed was always interested in becoming a nurse. Shortly after high school he began working at Wilmington General Hospital as a Respiratory Therapist. He knew it was important to continue his education and he soon enrolled in the Nursing program at Del Tech and received his ASN and his nursing license shortly after graduation. From there he continued his education and received his nursing bachelor degree (BSN) from Wilmington College and his Masters in Nursing (MSN) from Wesley in Dover, both while continuing to work fulltime. His nursing specialty was as a Certified Infectious Disease nurse. In addition to working more than 19 years at Christiana Hospital, Ed also did consulting at ST. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud MN, Jennersville Hospital in Jennersville, PA and Rockford Center in Newark, DE. He completed his career as an Infectious Disease nurse working for 13 years at the Philadelphia Veterans Hospital.
In November 2000, Ed was diagnosed with Parkinson disease, but was able to work and drive to Philly from Delaware without problems until his retirement in 2015. After his retirement Parkinson caused coordination problems which caused him to fall and sometimes injure himself. He endured broken fingers, a fractured wrist, several bruised or broken ribs and several cuts to his scalp. A fall ultimately cut short his life. He also suffered from Asthma and COPD. As a result of all that bodily injury and the suffering associated with Parkinson Disease, it is certain that upon his death heaven received a new angel.
Prior to his retirement in 2015 before Parkinson Disease became more controlling, Ed was an avid runner and cyclist. Most afternoons and weekends he could be seen jogging or riding his bike through the hills of Greenville and Centreville. He also enjoyed spending time at his beach home in Virginia, walking, fishing or swimming along the shores of the Chesapeake Bay.
In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his sister Betty Knapp and his brother C. James Lyons, Jr. He is survived by his partner of over 46 years Thomas Colombo, and his niece Connie Kay Sawyer and nephew Haywood Fred Knapp. Ed and Thomas were married on January 13, 2016
Per his request there will be no viewing and Ed's remains will be cremated. A remembrance service will be held at a future date. If you choose, make contributions in Ed's name to a charity of your choice. On-line condolences may be sent to Mealeyfuneralhomes.com
