Obituary

Charles William Perkins, age 75, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 16, 2025. Born in West Chicago, Illinois, Charlie was the son of the late William Charles Perkins and Abiah Hazel Shifferd. He graduated from West Chicago High School, where he was a proud member of the swimming team, and went on to earn his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Illinois. His professional journey took him to Wilmington, Delaware, where he began his career at AstraZeneca before discovering his true passion-teaching. Charlie shared his love for organic chemistry with generations of students during his tenure at Villanova University, followed by teaching roles at Temple University and St. Joseph's University. His dedication to education and mentorship left a lasting impact on his students and colleagues alike. Charlie had a lifelong passion for physical fitness. He taught aerobics classes, practiced yoga, and was a regular at the YMCA. An avid road cyclist and triathlete, Charlie inspired others with his energy and commitment to health and wellness. He was also a regular platelet donor, generously giving his time to help save the lives of others through his consistent contributions. In 2005, Charlie met the love of his life, Mary Tina Palmer, on an online dating site. Their bond was instant and deep. Soon after meeting, Charlie introduced Tina to cycling, which became a shared passion. Together they embarked on countless adventures and group rides with friends, cycling tours through Virginia, Michigan, and Vermont, and a honeymoon spent biking through California's wine country. Music was another cornerstone of Charlie's life. He had a deep appreciation for opera, symphonic, and popular music, and regularly attended concerts by the Philadelphia Orchestra and performances at the Grand Opera House in Wilmington. He also enjoyed going out to dinner and the movies, and found joy in quieter pastimes like bridge, chess, and wine tastings. Charlie is predeceased by his parents and his brother, Stuart Perkins. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Tina Palmer; his sister, Virginia Perkins; nephews Sean and Justin Perkins; sister-in-law's Annette DiEdoardo and Donna Mitchell; brother-in-law's Michael Palmer and Alfred Palmer; and many other nieces, nephews, and cousins. Charlie will be remembered for his intellect, kindness, sense of humor, and the joy he brought to others. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A visitation for Charlie will be held at Mealey Funeral Home, 2509 Limestone Rd, Wilmington, DE 19808 on Thursday, May 22, 2025 from 5 P.M. to 6 P.M. Words of remembrance to follow at 6 P.M.
